Ugly box... nice to have ports on the front though. No real threat to the cube legacy.
Now that we can have two optical drives maybe Apple can add front ports to the powermac?

It's nothing more than a guessing game *if* Apple is even going to use this cpu but if I wanted to throw my two cents in, I'd agree with the early 2004 number. The number of these needed will be much, much greater than those sahara's for the ibooks even without the expected hype. Lets not forget that this is a first gen chip that should be expected to have problems along the way. I'd say look for Apple to counter the expected hype with a G5 in 2003 from Moto.
It seems to me that IBM is typically one to not overhype their products which gives me confidence in the comments made that they'll be able to crank the clockspeed up pretty quickly after the initial chips are released.
Also I find it funny that Apple rarely announces any significant new or upgraded Mac hardware at the Macworld shows any longer yet people still cling to the fact that they can predict announcements by those dates.
Now I'm just waiting for the first Apple pda rumor that uses one of these 970's. ;)

Has anyone been able to get Starcraft: Broodwar running on any Intel Mac? I would love to run it on my Mac Pro, but only the original Starcraft seems to work. Thanks to anyone who can help.

WHAT!!! As if. All of apples headline style computers are way cool. We shouldnt have to put up with faults. A fault would mean it is no longer the coolest looking machine ever.

I have been using the beta of WMP 11 for a while now with some interest. WMP 11 combines music, video, and photo playback in the one window application. The appearance of the app (and of upcoming Vista) is more like prelease versions of Mac OS X, back before Apple muted the "lickability" of its GUI. WMP is a shiny black with blue accents. It acts as a browser for a good number of online music stores, but most notably pushes URGE.
Having used it for some time, I am reminded of my earlier concenrs over the naming of iTunes.
Windows Media Player is fortunately named because it is a catch all for all types of media: music, TV, movies, and photos.
Now that iTunes does music AND videos it seems the naming is less than ideal. It also brings to mind that Apple may in the future want to integrate iPhoto functionality directly into iTunes, and even iMovie, and iDVD, and GarageBand.
I suppose the singular application could be called iLife, and iLife Lite on Windows would support playback but not editing of creation of music, videos, and photos.
I believe also that with or without these future additions, the source list of iTunes should be clarified with more hierarchy.

I'm always optimistic about what Apple offers....... I'm almost never pessimistic about Apples products...mainly because I don't believe the unbelieveable rumors....

mc64k, I here a new challenge for you! Make your scripts to work native for Intel Macs!!
Its the client thats the problem. We need stanford to come out with a UB. I know they have been working on it.

Oh well, no new 19" widescreen display, apple just lost me as a customer. I'm not going to switch, gonna stick w/ my p4 1.8 ghz. I'll probably go buy a sony lcd this weekend.
Good going apple, keep sitting on your lazy arses
I hear the Brooklyn Bridge may be up for sale. Want to buy it?
Somehow I doubt your veracity in basing a purchase on rumors.

Register has an article verifying the 160+ instructions are Altivec compatible. Very good news.. I didn't see this talked about in the other threads.. and it's getting old reading people talk about the new 970 processor vs other chips... and what not.. so i started a new thread so all could see.
http://www.theregus.com/content/3/26650.html
"IBM's Peter Sandon disclosed technical details for IBM's PowerPC 970 processor in San Jose this morning and confirmed that the processor supports the AltiVec instruction set. "
Register writer Andrew Orlowski notes "The 970 smokes today's desktop competition in terms of raw number crunching." -- not sure if he's speaking of apple's current desktops or pc desktops in general. I would assume the latter.

Don't know about the price being cut......but, my guess is a new line of displays on Oct 1.
Apple's current display promotion ends on a Monday, and Apple seems to always release new products on Tuesday mornings, especially after a promotion.
I'd love to see the 17" price more in line with the competition (on the PC side)....maybe in the $799 range. A 19" widescreen would be really cool at the current $999 range.
Fingers crossed.....................

I've got a G5 that runs constantly - I guess I could help you all :o :). It's a 1.9GHz 512MB 17" iMac G5. Should I bother?
I also have a 1.42GHz iBook that sits in the closet acting as a server (in sig - picture) and it also has 512MB RAM... it runs continuously and never has processor intensive work going on...
Hmmmmmm... Maybe I could help MacRumors...

Is this the one by Hudson too? They don't normally develop poo.
Seem's like poo was on a 2 for 1 sale :o
I didn't care about the games graphics, after all pilotwings wasn't WOW it was the gameplay that made it excellent. Nintendo dissapointed me with no PW game for the cube, when I first saw this game it rekindled my PW hopes, hence I'm dissapointed.
Added to the fact that the launch schedule for Europe is looking like utter ***** on the wii. We dont even get trauma centre until the end of July now.
If the release schedule has little appeal for someone like me who buys a shedload of games - for some of the more judicious choosing types - it's practically non existant....

I'd take the report with a grain of salt. It is based on the assumption people want single faster CPUs. In fact market research tells us this isn't the case and there is an increasing push towards multi-processor or multi-core designs.
