I know this sounds kinda crazy, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if the powerbook 800 is as fast or faster than the powermac dual 533....

I am looking to buy a powerbook for my personal use, and @work I use a dual 533 which is pretty quick at most things, but on some apps I use it can get a tad bit sluggish.

But I was thinking that a single 800 with the better cache may actually run faster than the dual 533....

    Any ideas on this??

Apple built an entirely new enclosure without a new processor. They probably didn't do this if they only intended to upgrade to something better, right?

My guess is that whatever they had originally planned didn't pan out in the time frame that they hoped for.

Whether it be a new processor (G5?) or some revision on the existing formula (quad processor G4s?), Apple clearly intends to put something that uses a lot more power in these cases.

Even if they intend to keep the old G4s in these new cases for a while, it still might make economic sense to move to a single case with over-rated power supply. That can certainly be cheaper than supporting the manufacturing costs of two completely different, Apple-custom, case designs.

The other reason might be that Apple intends to offer "upgrades" to the G5 for users who have purchased one of these new G4 machines. It would simplify the upgrade program costs (and dangers) if it didn't require a power supply replacement.

If this stays exclusive to PS3 I have to say this will sell the console for me. Loved that game and I am sure that the new one will be nothing short of amazing.

    MacBandit:

That said the tests on the railhead website have a flaw. The tests a) are not multiprocessor aware b) are not altivec aware. This leads to a problem the old G4 has a larger L3 cache which doesn't really come in to play unless you are doing altivec aware tasks. So in my opinion these tests have basically illuminated the L3 cache from the test. That being the case you would expect the new machine to shine it has a faster bus then the previous machines. Which does make a big difference.
You are very much wrong. The L3 holds data and instructions and cares not what type of instructions those are. One does not need AltiVec to use L3. It is also not correct to say that AltiVec makes better use of the L3 than straight PPC code would, because AltiVec could very very easily end up working on data set much larger than the L3, at which point the L3 is rendered unimportant and the FSB speed becomes important.

    barkmonster:

The 733Mhz G4 score is laughable to say the least, it's not even seperating the QS from the digital audio models and there's no way it's 63% faster than a 533Mhz G4 at anything. They both have a 133Mhz FSB and PC133 RAM, 1 has a 4 stage pipeline and 1Mb L2 at a 2:1 ratio, the other has a 7 stage pipeline, a 256K L2 at a 1:1 ratio and a 1Mb L3 at a 3:1 ratio and that cpu didn't use DDR on the L3 either because it was the PPC7450 not the PPC7455.
You are very wrong as well. While the longer pipeline CAN hurt performance, there are many many types of programs in which it does not (note how fast P4s can be in the "right" test). There are many things that I can think of computing that would show perfect scaling with clockspeed, and there are certainly things I can think of (as far as instruction mixes) that would show a 745x being far superior to the old G4, even clock-for-clock. The point is that I can pick a test to show the different versions of the G4 however I like, I just need to exploit the strengths and weaknesses of each. Discounting this recenct becnhmark as BS (or whatever) on grounds of it not agreeing with other benckmarks is stupid. This is a real test as much as all the Photoshop tests (or whatever you have in mind that shows the 533 in a more favorable light). The whole point in having a lot of benchmarks to look at is so you can get a better picture of actual performance. One test does not reveal all. Different chips are strong in different areas.

    MacBandit:

Sorry but a 3x faster chip doesn't mean 3x faster performance. There are other bottlenecks such as hard drive speed and ram speed.
I assume that you realize that there are things with will scale perfectly with clock speed, and there are things that will scale perfectly with FSB speed, and there are things that will scale perfectly with hard disk speed. Most things are a combination of all three, but making a blanket statment as you have is plainly wrong.

    SilvorX:

uh that doesnt sound too promising concidering the single 867 is faster than the dual ddr 867
Well the single 867 has 2mb L3 whereas the dual has only 1mb per chip, and the FSB is the same. Remember earlier in this post where I scolded MacBandit about the L3 being useful in non-AltiVec? Well this may be an example.

Note: This application has been untested by this site, and Apple will likely take steps to prevent future usage.iTMS just used web service interfaces and XML over HTTP... It will be interesting to see just how they could stop an app from accessing.

What is more likely is that the iTMS servers would add in the DRM and buyer metadata before it gets downloaded. Its actually a little shocking that it wasn't designed to do that in the first place!

Spec fp is extremely biased because it assumes the case of zero error code. It doesn't measure raw performance like floating point calculations per second does. When errors occur in code, the Pentium grinds to a halt, sometimes even making the Pentium IV slower than the Pentium III that is a whole Ghz slower!

When RC5 and Genentech tests prove that raw performance the G4 is much faster than the Pentium IV or AMD, which it does, then it basically throws out the whole idea that Mhz matters. The G4 is 4 to 5 times faster.

As for hand optimizing code, you don't have to do it. What you do have to do is write developers of your software if you are displeased with how poorly they optimize code, or go seek better written software. That's why people who do video prefer Final Cut Pro over Adobe Premier in many cases.

As for other factors which influence speed, let's look at the internet browsing which people constantly harp about being slower on a Mac than a PC. My 768/128 DSL on my G4/800 Flat Panel iMac is easily 5 times faster browsing webpages than my T-3 based Windows 2000 Pentium III 1 Ghz machine. I wait and wait on this Pentium III. Goes to show you processor isn't everything. What really matters is how well written the software is. Mozilla for Mac OS X, and Chimera for Mac OS X, as well as iCab for Mac OS X are much faster than Explorer for any platform.
It is in software, and until people realize it is in the software, complaining about hardware is not going to matter a hill of beans. 64 bit processors are so slow to be developed because so few people have made their software optimized for 64 bit operations. If people need it, they'll get it. For 99% of computer use processor speed of machines nowadays is more than adequate both on PC and the Mac. Adding peripherals though is much easier on the Mac, and installing and removing software still is much easier on the Mac without causing a crash. And ease also means less time spent. So what does speed of the machine have to do with productivity when machines like PCs are so hard to manage? Nothing! Because when it is easier, it takes less time. That's the Mac advantage.

I still think they're bad, despite "knowing they're coming" or being able to click to stop them. Websites aren't the places to put TV ads, in my opinion.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I just went to the movie trailer page of Apple's, and there was a video that auto played there too! Some guy telling me to check out his movie trailer on Apple's site.

Apple is doing more of these videos that play when you go to a website, without clicking anything. Not less. I use to really like Apple's website, thought it was one of the better ones out there - by far. I use to go to their movie website a lot too. This is making me less inclined to.

Apple would have very likely collapsed if Microsuck had not bought out a large part of the company in the '90s. The stock has mostly expired, but there was a bad clause in the deal that allowed Microsoft to 'borrow' the look and feel of the Mac OS, therefore scuttling a Antitrust (I think) lawsuit filled by Apple around '96-ish.

Misinformation Police! Feet back and spread 'em!

    None of this actually happened.

For machines that ship in any quantity to be worth talking about for large mnfs, I don't think N>2 is going to figure in any x86 variants. They may exist as geek/specialist high end machines for prestige purposes, but I really don't see them clocking up the volumes...

Still with all the lies, they put out about rumble, its not going to look great, but at the end of the day, its one more feature for the PS3.

Just a minute. You are saying that some guy working in retail sales is clueless and uninformmed. What do you expect? Comp USA pays like $7.00 per hour.

I remember being at Fry's (big california discount chain) someone asked a technical about a graphic card. The sales person took the box from the customer and attempeted to answer the question by reading aloud the back of the box as if he was helpig a customer who could not read. Of course he had no clue that what he was reading did not address the question. Fry starts new sales people at minimum wage.

I once asked a question at Fry's about the difference between two CRT monitors that for All I could see had identical specs and the same manufacturer. The salesman when to get his supervisior. The "expert" came out of the back room and said that one of the two hade "more megahertz inside" and he thinks the "co-processor is faster". I give credit the the saleman who admited "I don't know" then to his boss. (turned out one CRT had higher max vertical refresh)

??? I thought Blizzard shipped this game on hybrid PC/Mac discs? How did you ever play it (want to "get back into it") if you didn't have the Mac version to begin with? Check again.

Using OS X? Try to download the Carbon/OS X installer from Blizzard. It may be the System 9 installer on the discs isn't playing nice with OS X.

Well, I just stumbled upon this section for the first time, but I think if the forum was moved to the top of the page, then more people would visit and post in it. This would ruin the awesome exclusivness (<--I think it's a word  ) of this forum. Even though no one seems to really post in here, it could be a nice place to have secluded discussion about MR stuff instead of on the General board.

Just my random thought after finding this forum for the first time.
