I've got 130 3Ghz Dell desktops, 60 1.7Ghz Pentium M Thinkpads, 2 IBM XSeries both with quad Xeons at 3Ghz, 1 Compaq Prolient with quad Pentium Pros at 200Mhz, and a AS/400. I would love to help you out but there is that whole firing unpleasantness thing that would happen if I loaded unauthorized software office wide. I kinda like my job. Well kinda. I could do without the outsourcing politics that is emerging but that's a different discussion. Hmmm I could roll this software out in our login scripts and tell everyone to leave their computers on 24/7. Wonder how long I could get away with it before.... *shakes head* never mind. Bad idea. :D

I wouldn't be surprised if apple just brings something out without a huge media event. So many people know Apple now anyway. They'll get press no matter what.

This might not be the right forum, but, this really surprised me.
I was watching the 1984 Superbowl ad, and can swear I saw an iPod on the girl's belt!
I haven't reached any conclusions yet, but that really looks like an iPod:

I take it that you have never seen the Star Wars line of legos?

No, they just upgraded the storage capacities, I doubt that they would make another upgrade so soon. Additionally, I've been able to get through .Mac fine this morning, so I think it might just be you having the problems.

Macs are made in the same massive Asian factories as the big PC manufacturers' are anyway.

And I disagree that all PCs are crap as you say they are. Windows has come a long way, like it or not, and PCs are not the BSOD-every-hour computers they used to be. They've gotten a lot better in recent years, and this is why so many Macrumors posters are worried and yelling at Apple to get a move on with the faster machines.
    Alex

I agree with you 110% all the way! Like I was saying earlier, my XP machine has never BSOD'd me. I used to have a shirt a long time ago that said, Macintosh 89' = Windows 95'. Now longer can I make this argument. Also very good point about the components.

Bewarned, ppl are going to flame us, but I don't care. I think you and I are being completely honost. Many of us here really want to see Apple lead the pack again in hardware.

[QUOTE=717]Well said. This is why i'm stil on Quark 4.1 and on Illustrator 5.5 in classic mode (and they startup faster). I have Illustrator 10 and it s*cks on a 2.0MP G5.

if illustrator sucks on ur dp g5 then u have bigger problems.
if ur using illustrator 5.5 then u are certinaly not a professional the design industry.

Illustrator 10 also sucks on my 2.0ghz G5, mostly because it crashes a lot. For the most part, I use 9.0, but 5.5 is a bit drastic.

I think that if the Gentoo Portage system for OSX comes along in a big way it would allow for a lot more Open Source apps to become much more widely adopted. Maybe someone will decide to port it to Windows, just to give them a taste of what they could have...

Another rumor I've heard going around is one of Intels Pentium 5.

We all know about the amazing 4.7Ghz P4 but it's actually not that much faster than a 2.5Ghz P4 because they added so many steps to get up to that clock speed.

In the P5 they tried to stop this troubling trend and found out, they could only get a 1.3Ghz P5, pretty much equal to the G4, without all those extra steps.

    Amusing...

I've talked others into buying Macs. Most of those were school purchases (hundreds of Macs overall), but a few were friends, neighbors, and coworkers.

I help people who mistake me for an employee at an Apple Store, but I've also done that at Best Buy, so that's not Apple specific. Perhaps if I didn't wear solid-color T-shirts, that wouldn't happen so often!

So I looked in my brand new (as of today) dual gig from macmall - who triples your ram on that model btw.

I had the 256 chip that came with the mac, and the 512 that macmall installed.

Go buy your machines from a third party already!

I would love to see them return to black polycarbonate. Maybe titanium or magnesium reinforced on the corners with supports cast right into the poly. Then put in a true 16:9 display for killer presentations. I wouldn't care if it was two feet wide! And I wouldn't WANT it an inch thick, unless it were milled out of solid aluminum, because I want to use it in the bump-scratch-and-drop real world, not the land of "esoteric design utopia" where laptops are never dropped, bumped, twisted, scratched, handed from one person to another, or even touched.

I hear the Japanese don't like TiBooks because they are too wide to comforably use on their subway trains. I say give them 12" iBooks w/processing abilities at TiBook levels. For the travelling film/graphic arts/web design professional, however, give us a big platform, durable, versatile machine again. EXPANSION BAYS! Yes, you can hook up peripherals via FW all you want, but I don't want to bring an octopus to a presentation. I would rather hot-swap whatever I'll need (CDR-DVDR, extra battery, extra HD, etc) ten minutes before the meeting and have an elegant platform to work from.

Take a Pismo and just add about three inches of width to the case and the screen, 1.5" per sidethink 17" iMac widescreen display on a laptop. Make room for 2 G4 processors, 2 gig RAM, and true DDR RAM with 133mhz bus speed. Use the extra space to make BIG expansion bays for long battery life, huge auxiliary HDs, SuperDrives, etc. Keep the excellent output options, plus an additional DV out for Apple external displays (not that you'd need one) and perhaps two completely discreet FireWire busses instead of two ports on the same bus. Reinforce the chassis w/titanium or magnesium supports and gel-suspend a g-force resistant internal HD for hard portable usage. Offer a CardBus expansion chassis like the Magma only classier-looking and Apple-branded as a BTO option for use with PCI cards. None of this would be cutting-edge technology--its all here now.

The Apple G4 SuperPismonow THAT would be worth $4000 in a portable. Imagine the crowd that would gather around it at any CompUSA in the nation with that 17" screen! It would make the biggest Vaio look like a Timex Sinclair!

I say if you're gonna be a bear, be a grizzly... Make a statement... Over the top...

So that is why on my DDR machine the ram slots are now right above the heat sink rather then clear across the motherboard from the cpu on my old B/W G3. So they did this so the air being pushed through the heatsink wouldn't also get pushed up and over ram cards? I personally haven't checked to see if the DDR ram is hotter I just know what I've read about PC's that went from SDR to DDR and yes they got hotter.

Just because the voltage is lower does not always mean that it produces less heat. Also on my machine the clockspeed is not the same it is now 167Mhz. The people pushing for DDR in the Powerbooks also want the 167Mhz Bus because the current machines already have 133Mhz bus' in them. Between the Bus and the DDR Ram there is a heat increase.

I still do not understand why Apple has not done something similar, they were soooooo close to releasing it, even had it up for a couple days as a new ?Panther> feature, and then didn't? Must have thought it would hurt .Mac sales, well most everything hurts .Mac sales...it's kind of a waste

so give us Home Pod, or whatever it was called I forget.

If Apple were to sell a x86 computer running OS X and it was faster, it would probably give us better machines at a better price, again boosting Apple's image and market share. Sure at the expense of the PPC but they would still get the sales on the x86 side. Apple does not need to be in the CPU business to be profitable in hardware. Just ask Microsoft. Again a win for Apple.

What would probably happen is the x86 machine would be cheap and fast for many things, but not for audio/video/graphics. Here the Velocity Engine would help out. So the customer decides what he or she is going to use the computer and buys the right tool for the job. THE CHIP SPEED DEBATE NEEDS TO BE SEPARATE FROM THE OS DEBATE!

I think there are a few questions and points missing from your analysis.

Do you have any idea how much it would cost to design, tool, manufacture and market a machine with an x86 based CPU to prove it would be better to use PPC?

If Apple releases a machine based on an x86 CPU, what application software would anyone run on it? None of the apps would work since they are compiled for PPC, and I doubt the app vendors would be keen on building for both.

Apple already has a less expensive CPU without Velocity Engine for customers who do not need high multimedia power. Its called the G3.

Do you have any idea how much it would cost Apple in terms of money and effort to maintain an optimized release of OS X and all of the iApps for both PPC and x86?

I'm not trying to be critical. But I do not see where having both x86 and PPC based systems would be practical or a win.

Well you wouldn't have to buy one with an internal Superdrive would you???

It's very likely to be a VERY expensive option!! So you wouldn't have to have one installed........ Simple..... but atleast Apple should if possible give people a choice of having an internal option......

Yeah I want true DDR, cheaper, better displays and a Power4 chip that kicks heavy arse, but I'd love to see a total rethink about Tower design, the same way the new iMac revolutionized PC design. Is a big clumsy tower the best solution we can thik of? No! Come on Apple! Challenge yourselves and come up with another great original idea. And cut down on the amount of wires! It's 2002 and we at least shouldn't have to plug in a mouse and keyboard anymore! Make something sleek and cool! Give us a 1984, Brave New World desktop!
