Wow, um, overreaction to the nth degree. It's a flaw, not an in-the-wild exploit. This isn't causing worms to traverse the Internet, propagating themselves and destroying computers in their wake. It's about as "critical" as the much over-hyped MP3 "virus" (read: scam) for OS X several months ago. The code will be updated, we'll get a Software Update if it's really an issue, and the whole thing will blow over.

If you can disable the security manager like it says, then you have full access to the Java class library from your Applet. So that's a pretty big exploit. For example the Applet could get a list of documents in your home directory and email them off. Better not have anything private in there!

It's like a ghost town in the rumor business today.

I gave up on distributed computing shortly after getting a laptop, too. These little babies just aren't made for that constant work. So I'll probably be staying at my 2,671 classic work units for seti@home for a long, long time...

Reminds me of Farenheit 451's "shell." Can't wait to see the tv walls that were the counterpart...

Just a few details. I can verify the subject of the post is genuine and as far I recall it has been pretty well talked about by Intel and planned for some time. It certainly hasn't been kept secret.

I would however be a touch surprised if it is called the PV. It really is very much an evolution of the PIV and nothing new.

The 1MB Level 2 cache is expected it roughly doubles every fabrication generation improvement at the moment. AMD has already planned the same for the Hammer series. The faster FSB is also nothing new or surprising.

The current PIV has ~55 million transistors though and a rough doubling over a fabrication generational change isn't unexpected.

Really there's nothing new there that Intel hasn't had roadmapped since early 2002 and before.

On the Apple side I have said this before and I will say it again. The G4 core has life. Improvements can be made to easily lift its performance substantially and there are things worth note coming :) Whether they will arrive on time is another matter and whether they will satisfy everybody I can't say but given people are rarely pleased I'd say probably not :p

I wish people would understand that this program is mainly created so that people who use Linux (don't know if you have heard of it, it has a larger market share than Mac OS X if I remember right  ) can listen to the music which they have purchased.

If Apple would just stop being *******s and port iTunes and Quicktime to Linux we wouldn't have these "problems," which in reality are nothing more than people trying to use Linux. I am totally for that.

I'm not able to use Linux on my new Powerbook because Apple, like usual, won't open up airport extreme card drivers.

    Apple, you are ridiculous.

If they release new PowerBooks now I'll be pissed off!
Because I am buying new ones in february..so,San Francisco is fine for me.

Tell me about PB's screen, some ppl said it is not good..is that true?
And..the most important, whats GUI speed on 800 MHz model (in jaguar)?
how much fps do you get with iTunes fullscreen?
Do you notice any lags when running iTunes in background and few more apps while running Flash MX? Anyone tried that? If Flash MX ,Dreamweaver,Illustrator etc. are slow on Titanium,I cannot buy it.

    Cool.Thanks.

How can an ITC administrative judge make a decision then if the district court does that.
    http://www.itds.treas.gov/Sec337.htm

It's patently funny to see a Singapore based company making complaints on a US based one using an act whose intent is described as (acording to the Treasury Dept):

In general, Section 337 prohibits any unfair method of competition or unfair act in the importation of articles if the effect or threat of such importation is to destroy or to significantly damage a U.S. industry, prevent the establishment of an industry, or restrain or monopolize trade in the United States. Specifically, section 337 prohibits importation of articles that infringe a valid and enforceable United States patent, registered copyright, or registered trademark, as well as articles that are produced by means of a process covered by a valid and enforceable United States patent.

Seems like Apple's easiest workaround would be to use a US contract manufacturer (if they could find one)...

Well Soundtrack is being bundled with FCPexpress, which makes more sense to me, since Soundtrack was hardly embraced by the pro community, to the aspersions of Logic and BIAS.

That's funny, but now that I hear it, doesn't really surprise me.

I'm not really sure I understand this whole UMPC concept. It's not a Pocket PC or a laptop. To me it just seems to take the worst of each. Not as capable as a laptop: no keyboard. Not as portable as a Pocket PC. What exactly are you supposed to use this for? What niche is it trying to fill? Seems to me, unless I can actually put it in my pocket (ie. don't have to carry a bag) then I might as well cary a fully-capable, lightweight notebook.

It's basically a solution in search of a problem, and the problem now (at least for the marketers) is how to separate your money from your wallet before you catch on to the fact that you really don't need it in the first place.

Maybe it's an oversized Palm, or maybe it's a crippled laptop, or, as the author of the article above politely surmises, maybe it's just "too revolutionary." lol

One more question. What population size server do you guys prefer; high, medium or low? Is one better than the other. I have selected a server with a low population but I am not sure that is the best thing to do. Perhaps they have a low population for a reason?

I'd go for Low. The EU Moonglade server was always Low when I started and steadily sky rocketed.

Now that you have explained your post you are absolutely correct. There will never be a 700Mhz G3 on a 133Mhz Bus. The multiplier is all wrong. On the other hand a 800Mhz G3 could work on a 133Mhz bus with a 6x multiplier.

Since when was 1051 ever higher than 1170. Same is true for 937. 937 isn't higher than 1202. So technically, the AMD is beating the PowerPC 970. Who cares if it's at a higher clock. 200 MHz, yay! That doesn't mean the AMD is less efficient... from the looks of it, the AMD is just as efficient, just coming out earlier.

I agree that the AMD and the P4 will be faster by the time the 970 comes out, but lets not forget that the Power Mac will probably be DUAL!!!!! Also you should consider that by the time the 970 comes out, there will only be two 64bit processors in the desktop market: AMD Hammer and the PPC 970 (the Itanium is not a desktop processor.)
Apple knows they need to improve their power lines. Did you read Apples Q4 results? Their Power Mac sales are extremely low; they will definitely push performance with the 970. So think about it this way:

    -Dual 970 1.8GHz
