Agreed, 2000 vs 4000 sounds bad from a marketing performance viewpoint. But my issue was why are we getting in to comparing the numbers? This way of comparing manages to exclude anything about hardware build quality or software quality. I think the Mac community should be trying some agenda setting of its own regarding quality, rather than having to get defensive about numbers. All these number comparisons avoid many significant aspects and I was reacting to seeing another sub-thread starting on just a numbers comparison. For example, I've spent a while reading Cocoa documentation (not quite enough free time to really get down to interesting coding unfortunately though). So, for basically no effort, every text widget can benefit from text-to-speech and textual summarise capabilities - does MS offer this? These have no direct relationship to the performance numbers, but they strike me as pretty significant (at least noteworthy) capabilities. Likewise, when I'm typing, I get a voice telling me that Mozilla needs my attention and the focus remains precisely where it is until I decide to go and see what was upsetting Mozilla. Heck, I've tried that last item on a range of "generic" users and all have them have responded that they'd like to have that feature available. but nowhere in their reaction was there anything close to 2000 vs 4000 comparisons.

So my argument is that, by only talking about how the numbers are not what they seem, Mac users are ignoring the thing that really makes a difference, namely quality.

See post directly above for AMD Hammer. As for Intel's Itanium, I'm not sure. Let me check. I'll post the number in an edit.

Okay. Intel's Itanium has 6.4GB/sec memory bandwidth as stated here: http://www.intel.com/products/server/processors/server/itanium2/index.htm?iid=ipp_srvr_proc+itanium2srvr& so Apple and IBM are behind the pack already.

The memory bandwidth issue is going to be an interesting debate for a good few months to come. Elsewhere, we had a figure of about 19GB/S for Hammer, but spread across three buses, which makes for only fractionally higher peak bandwidth that either PPC970 or Itanium are talking about. It is very believable that the issue of how fast the CPU is is going to be largely irrelevant because future memory systems are going to struggle to keep up.

I put forward the assertion that the most significant benefit of a 64 bit processor is that the size of an address (ie a memory pointer), rather than an integer is 64 bits. And this is because of sparse memory spaces, not fully populated (!!!!) memory systems.

Apart from very unusual situations, Altivec is probably going to give more general performance gain than 64 bit integers.

Now, who was I disagreeing with :D

I was visiting this site for over a year before I joined. I was then running a very outdated P1 166 (and iMac 233 while at work). Things have changed a lot, I'm typing this on a P4 2.2, and have a Dual 2 G5 arriving any day now.....

i'm pretty sure apple named the street after they got there. does anyone have confirmation? or else that's what i'll take as truth

The road wasn't built until Apple came and built the campus there. The Microsoft equivalent of Google Earth got rapped last year for using an outdated photo where 1 Infinite Loop didn't exist, and there was no road at all, just a few old buildings and some waste ground. Some commented that the ommision was wishful thinking on Redmond's part :D

It's a different matter on my campus. About half the laptops I've seen on the Cal campus are Macs. It's much more than a "small poket" here to say the least!

i couldn't imagine a school, if i had to guess off the top of my head, that would be more mac friendly than cal

I actually think it would be rather relaxing if I knew they were going to get me out.

Until you remembered about that huge Coke you drank an hour or so ago while out and about.

I'm not sure I could have walked out of that store without reporting the employee to management. No sales representative should be dissing any product they sell. This guy is too stupid to be talking to customers, even at CompUSA.

No mention of any virtual desktop manager. My Mac usage is crippled without CodeTek VirtualDesktop.

I appreciate what DVD Jon did to help Linux owners watch dvds, but this is going to far. I hope Apple come up with a fix for this, and soon.

How is this going farther than DeCSS for DVD's?

Last I checked, Linux users couldn't use iTunes DRM'd songs on Linux either. How is this different from the DVD cracker? Its purpose is to use digital files LEGALLY PURCHASED on a device of the purchaser's choice.

The only differences here are that 1) the offending company is Apple, and 2) The iTunes Music Store's terms of service agreement. By using Jon's tool, you KNOWINGLY and WILLINGLY are violating an agreement that you yourself agreed to.

I never signed away my rights to play a DVD on Linux when I bought it, for example, so DeCSS has a tiny bit more of a leg to stand on.

But, this certainly isn't "going too far"

    Right. That's what I meant.

Any released chip (that isn't a new architecture, of course) is rated as high as it's rated. If the new chip is a G4 7455, or whatever the 1 GHz is now, it'll be rated at 1.25. That doesn't mean it's an OC'ed 1 GHz. It means it's a similar chip that is rated to run higher. Just like the 867 MHz vs. 1 GHz analogy made earlier.

Of course, there have been execptions to the rule. Usually with not-so-good results. (I'm surprised I haven't been flamed more for this).

Now whether or not it can truly take advantage of the DDR... that's another subject.

ive got the Beta and must say it is growing on me, and the user interface will be easier for lesser-PC savvy people. One wish (or two or three :P) from Office 2007:

    1) same release date for PC and Mac version with seemless compatibility
    2) M$ Publisher for Mac, o please!!!!

    Not quite.

Rush stands for the guy on the radio...

However, it would really be cool if Rush band members used Macs too!

But I'm not sure on that...

I'm in New Hampshire and use Gamefly, it takes about 5 days for me to get a game and about 1-2 days for them to get notice from USPS that I returned a game, they use a scanning feature that allows them to have USPS send them details and ship a game to you before they physically receive it.

Probably the best thing I like about Gamefly is the rewards program they have, every 3 months you get 5 Gamefly bucks and on top of that you get either a 5% or 10% (off their keep it price) discount depending how long you've been a member. I just went over a year and get 10% off so when I rent and want to keep it I'm getting about $15-$20 off a new release (I can keep GR:AW2 for $43.19 or Crackdown for $40.49, not bad for 2 recently released games that are MSRP $59.99).

    Are you kidding? Quality? :D

Actually, a few summers ago I managed to do up to 58 or so posts in a day, nothing like the 200+ jello had, which I witnessed part of.

I used to post a lot more, but college often takes over. So when I have little time to get online, I'm usually only online for priority means (either college work or in a specific section of DA).

This weekend, into the week, however, I'm going to have lots of free time. So between/among playing billiards (we have a s***** 3.5 by 7 foot mini), videogames, out of house activities, and reviewing, I'm sure I'll find some way to get online.

You'd be surprised, but eye used to be a top "dog" (that damn thing needs to quit smoking cigars ) at post rates. Now even he has slacked off. Give credit where it's due, right 603, I mean, Mr. A? :p
