Muhahahahaha! :D :D
Kate, when my father is looking for a new Mac, he usually goes straight to www.smalldog.com and gets a deal on them (mostly older Macs). My father placed an order for the top of the line Cube, a 15 inch LCD, and a Pro Keyboard (at the time, the one on my iMac didn't last that long), all, which were delivered in less than two weeks.
I wouldn't recommend ordering directly from Apple, if you are afraid of something like this.

Again, you're lying and have again, misinterpreted my posts.
"You suggsted we rally around some cause."
No, i suggested people contact Apple in some form, be it email, letter, fax or petition.
"You never quantified what that something was."
See above.
"Good point. You win."
It's not about winning you arrogant buffoon. Neither of us has "won" anything in this whole thread, i've been trying to point out to you time and time again, that the things we are arguing about are very similar, and yet you continue on a rampage of lies and misinterpretations.
You see you, Nipsy, make arguments for the sake of looking good to your "audience". You don't hope to achieve anything constructive by making an argument, other than looking good and padding your ego by using sarcasm and making the other person look as bad as you can. You fabricate points in your replies when the person your replying to has made no such point, and if you are as intelligent as you say you are, i can only assume that you are doing that on purpose.
An intellectual person will try to make constructive comments, and contribute to some kind of solution, you however, do not.
I agree with you on most of your points, Nipsy, as i have said many times ("Good points").
If you want a one man show, go on stage or become a politician. They fabricate lies and will do anything to come across as though they're making a good point, when they're not, too.

I imagined that my next computer would be another Mac to replace my ageing PC. Now it's not so clear. From the informed posts by new P4/XP users on this site it's clear that PC could do the things I want it to do more quickly and, arguably, with comparable stability.
BUT, I'm an expat living in Japan. One huge advantage of OSX is unicode. My Mac has a Japanese OS, which is great for my wife, but when I'm using the Mac I can switch the user language to English. Much of our Japanese software is also unicode compatible, so we can buy one program that can be used in either of our native languages. This is very cost-effective in the long-run.
I'm prepared to wait until next year when, hopefully, Apple will be using G5 chips from IBM that are much closer to those from Intel/AMD. I don't need my Mac to be the fastest computer out there (the advantages of OSX would bridge the gap) but I want it to be comparable if I'm going to shell out the extra bucks.
I don't really want to use XP. On-line activation and security issues still put me off.
If, however, Apple fail to deliver an impressive new hardware set next year, my next computer may well be PC.
I hope not, but you have to be realistic...
As a rule of thumb, there will always be a faster machine available if you're prepared to spend more, and whatever you buy will become obsolete somewhere between next day and next year. If speed is the only consideration, you'll probably be disappointed whatever you do and whenever you do it.
Decide your budget. Decide what you want to do with it. Find a shop where you can try it and see if it works for you. Work on the basis that you won't get the perfect machine, so decide whether whatever you're considering is good enough. Consider the software you'll want (and it's price!) as well as the hardware. Work on the basis that different people want different things from their computer(s) and get something that matchs your needs rather than whichever gets the loudest shouts for (or against).
And no, I'm not going to try and make a recommendation because I don't know enough about the ins and outs of all the details of what will meet your requirements.

Sorry yes you are right. What i meant was that they dont give it to regular consumers. If apple were to do that, even its top machines it would have the market to itself. The quad market that is. Just they have to keep the prices within 200 or 300 dollars of the current ones. If they can then ..... intel?? who is intel. AMD, werent they some little chip maker for intel??

True enough. Question is - - how do I figure out which App's will be "broken" under Emulated OS9?
For example, is there a website list somewhere, or general rule(s) of thumb?

(I apologize if this isn't the right place to post this, but it kinda is associated with Apple. I'm a newbie and still trying to learn...)
I've been waiting for months to find out why Steve "The Woz" Wozniak became a member on of the board of the directors at Danger (Danger.com). According to Danger and T-Mobile, a new hiptop device called "The Sidekick" is coming out. Oddly enough, dangerinfo.com reported that the possible release date is September 12 or 15 (or later). Does this match dates with MacWorld Paris?
I could be totally wrong about all of this but was wondering if anyone out there has any info on this. Thanks.

it would be another way of apple screwing people who buy their stuff early on... ie, early supporters... then being screwed for not waiting
i think we've seen enough of that for a bit

The Mac version of Firefox is crap, I'm afraid to say. I keep on trying to get on with it, but can't. I've been using Firefox on Windows since version 0.5 in early when it was still called Phoenix. Think the Windows version is the best browser ever, on any platform. The Mac version just doesn't work.
Best Mac browser all round at the moment I'd say is Camino. I like Safari's interface and general snappiness, but it chokes with animated gifs, Java and Flash.
If/when Firefox gets Mac-ified (version 1.1 by Easter apparently) I'm in for good. Until then, I stand by what I said.

I like computers just as much as the next geek but when you break it all down what can't you do with computers and OS's from even 5 years ago that you can today? In truth the only real benefits are that Windows and Mac systems are faster and more stable than they used to be. For Macs to make any inroads more innovation is the key. They cannot compete on price/performance and never will. Moving to x86 could help of course. Note that most people don't buy Macs because of price and not because of performance issues.
So with this in mind if you set aside the small contingent that truly needs faster Macs for their jobs in professional settings, the Mac really needs lower prices and more innovation. Do that and Apple will have a winner that they would need to open up the clone market again just to be able to make enough of them.
Frankly this whole benchmark argument is stupid for most of the people here. Benchmarks should be used as nothing more than a guide and you should have multiple sources if you want to base a purchasing decision from them alone. Too many people treat them as the end all be all.
One point you are missing is that I can upgrade my PC 5 times over and still have the cost be lower than buying a new Mac. So a mac can run modern apps 5 years later. For the same price, I can get a PC, drop a new HD, video card, and CPU in a few years later and then end up with a leading edge PC, and not a bleading edge mac. My B&W G3 isn't even upgradable to the speeds of the current iMacs. With a PC a new mobo and CPU will get me into whatever is the current CPU class....

What I think? It is slavery by any other name. And it sickens me that Apple believes it is saving money by having these female slaves make our computers and iPods. The given reason for women in the jobs is that they are more honest than men -- i.e. less prone to theft and aiding counterfeiters, I'm sure. If Apple, or any other Western company sniffing "cheap labor" in China actually tallied up the costs of doing business there, -- especially the costs of counterfeit shuffles, etc., they would pull out in a minute. It makes me feel like I am in collusion with the totalitarians in control of the chinese government when I buy these types of goods. These workers LIVE at the factory! OMG, we outlawed this sort of labor abuse one hundred years ago in the West. It is wrong, really sick and wrong.

Hey, it's my opinion, but cell phones would be a disaster. PDA's now that's a different story.
NOTE - the only thing that I could see Apple doing is badging someone else's phone and calling it an iPhone. But that's not really Apple's style.
Oh yeah, what exactly is a pro-phone?
Steve Jobs has already said that Apple would never make a PDA. As far as iPhone, he has made statements saying he "prefers not to comment on any future products." Don't have any links for that, though. Sorry. :(
