I used to always use Opera on Windows, but I use Firefox now.
If only Firefox had Fast Forward and Rewind like Opera, then it would be great...
I might check out Opera8 if I find time.

I'm sure if MS or Nintendo for that matter didn't pay up they would be calling FF a thing of the past as well. It happened to sony and we all know about it but now its on its way back and lets be happy about it.
Bless
Nintendo's rumble works in a different way to that of Sony and MS, so therefore didn't have to pay a cent to that company that eludes my mind right now.

No WiFi?
I'd take the XBox 360 Premium, + WiFi over an XBox 360 with a bigger hard drive, thanks.
I don't see why XBox 360 owners would be ticked, unless they *needed* HDMI (why does it matter that much? Component is still the same quality). It's just a hard drive upgrade. I'd still buy a Premium if I was buying one today.

I was just watching the history channel and saw an ad with an Apple Plus in it. The ad came on during their 10 Days that Unexpectedly Changed America (pretty good series) and suggested to me that it was for a show, my wife and I were talking so I didn't here what they were saying. Is this a repeat of an old show? I know that they did something a long time ago and I missed it. Has anyone else seen the ad? I couldn't find anything about it on the history channel's website.
Thanks

Speed does not matter. I could have stayed on my P3 500 if I wanted "Speed", but went to a PB 400. That PB was far more useful. My Dual 867 is nice and speedy too, and I can say, its a heck of a lot faster than me. I don't need a brick to get work done.

BitTorrent programs are the only way to go. All that other stuff is garbage. I like BitTorrent because I'm a music junkie and can't stand the fact that most of the music on networks like Kazaa is encoded by people who have no idea what they're doing. So I use Azureus to get full albums by people who, like myself, know what they're doing with music. Sure, Kazaa and Bearshare and great for computer-illiterates who don't care about good quality music, but I'll take the next step up, thank you.

that being said, i still have not been bombarded with AARP and retirement email spam
but since my late 30s, i have been bombarded with viagra, weight loss, prostrate cancer, and prespription drug ads and when i registered my computers, peripherals, software, etc, it was common in the mid 90s to late 90s to ask these type of lifestyle based questions on age...i do have friends who desperately need these services but are afraid to ask or opernly talk about it...on a guys night out with beer and pizza, it's not common for us to talk about impotence problems or reduced sperm count and not being able to have anymore kids...usually
but if enough beer flows, then the conversation among middle aged men gets interesting and people open up and then the issues with high insurance rates, reduced sperm count and infertility, reduced or even non active boner activity, weight loss, arthritis, hair loss (omg, i forgot that one...hehe), hair growth in wrong places like in the ears, and all the issues of the late 30s and beyond
since congress has stepped in, hardware and software vendors are less likely to ask you this personal stuff and much less likely to sell your personal information to spammers and the fortune 500 consumer hunters looking for a new batch of consumers on the internet
well this is all getting to be a depressing topic and be glad that you are in your 20s and hope that none of these aging topics hits you anytime soon...but they will all come to haunt you in good time:p

Read this original article I posted: http://arstechnica.com/wankerdesk/3q02/powerpc.html. Especially note this:
One of the most important and least-discussed features of the PowerPC 970 is its 900MHz DDR frontside bus. This bus physically runs at 450MHz, but it's double-pumped. Its architecture is interesting in that the bus actually consists of two, 32-bit unidirectional point-to-point links.

I don't have a link handy about the actual speed at which SSE/SSE2 operates, but I'll try to get back to you on that.
I realise SiMD is many instructions at once but you know what I mean
Actually SIMD stands for Single Instruction Multiple Data, so as you can see it is not many instructions at once, only mulitple hunks of data at once. It is accurate to say that a SIMD instruction does the work of multiple "normal" instructions.

Perhaps its just me, but http://macslash.org/ seems to be posting news less and less frequently. For a site that I used to read daily its almost turned into a maybe bi weekly hit for me. Sad when it proclaims itself a "Daily Dose of Mac News and Discussion". Its too bad because I really enjoyed reading news there.

Considering that the team was once 33 (without aggregates), it's not so bad still.
Still, the more people folding for the team the better.
I won't use my 1Ghz 12" Powerbook since its not fast and if it gets slower I'll cry, but my Uni gave me a 3.4GHz P4 with Hyperthreading and 2GB of RAM, so maybe I'll try and contribute. ;) I could just keep that puppy going forever.
@SiliconAddict: Just talk to system admin. They may not be your machines, but if there's no harm to them, especially at night, it
Question: Would my system ever go to sleep if I'm folding all the time, even at night? Will my CPU be running at 100% or anything close to that at all times? Seems harsh, and another reason I'm not going to use my PB for that. Sorry, but that has always been my main concern.

I'm not sure what you guys are saying about the iPod's hardware capabilities is totally accurate. According this DesignChain.com article (http://www.designchain.com/coverstory.asp?issue=summer02), iPod actually has a dedicated mp3 decoder chip:
The rest of the device uses a dedicated MP3 decoder and controller chip from PortalPlayer, a Wolfson Microelectronics Ltd. stereo digital-to-analog converter, a flash memory chip from Sharp Electronics Corp., a Texas Instruments 1394 firewire interface controller, and a power management and battery charging IC from Linear Technologies Inc.
Also from Anandtech.com (http://www.anandtech.com/audio/showdoc.html?i=1575&p=6):
The final noteworthy item on the iPod's PCB actually turns out to be the unit's CPU. The chip is a PP5002B-C chip made by PortalPlayer. Although the specifications of the version of the chip used in the iPod are not available on PortyalPlayer's website, specifications on their P5001 controller are available. Bearing the similar product names, we can speculate that not much has changed in the Apple specific chip. If this is in fact the case, then the PP5002B chip has a ARM7 TDMI based core with a coprocessor dedicated to real time encoding acceleration. The processor is able to not only decode MP3 and wma files (note that the iPod's chip can decode MP3 files up to 320 Kbps, MP3 variable bit rate, WAV, and AIFF files), it is also able to encode on the fly (a feature which Apple did not take advantage of in the iPod). The chip also features an integrated 32KB of SRAM and 8KB of cache. We are unsure of the operating frequency of the chip or how many MIPS the chip can handle, but the iPod never functioned slowly suggesting that there is plenty of power.

I am in a unique position, I actually bought the 667 G4 Powerbook. I thought I would need the power, the screen, the dual display option. Nope. I never did. After just one week, i realized i had made a 2500 mistake. And, I took the laptop to japan that week, and i had a very tough time using it on a plane.... it was just too big.
[edit: I returned the powerbook and bought a 16mb 600mhz ibook]
I am like you, i have a desktop mac, and i use my ibook as a wireless portal to the web, i use it for typing papers, and for e-mail. come on, who are you kidding? What do you need the power for? Are you Tim "Tool-time" Taylor? Do you need power just for the sake of having power? And some do. I cant argue that pros dont need power, some really do. But i didnt
So, I returned my powerbook, bought an ibook 600 with the 16mb video card. I love it. Oh, and one more thing.... when you sit on the couch and surf the web, the ibook is so much cooler. Really.... it is cooler. THe ti book got so hot, it was uncomfortable to use. Very uncomfortable. So much so that, I didnt use it on my lap. Now the ibook, it is very comfy.
And.... with the money i saved, i went out and bought my first fly fishing rod and reels with the money i saved. I now have a computer that rocks (for my purposes) and I can fly fish and have a ball doing that.

While I am no insider, I get the feeling that Apple might be just waiting for their stock to reduce a little before releasing new PowerBooks.
PowerBook 667s have been shipping to fill backlog whereas 800s have been in stock for a while.
As I suggested, I am just speculating here but maybe they are waiting to sell more 800s and clear stock and then they will release.

the jump in points was explained in the "bragging rights" thread near the end.
basicly, people had some WU they hadent got credit for, stanford gave cedit for all these uncredited WU over a three day period, everything is back to normal.

If you want to get exceptional mathematical performance then why are you getting a micro computer???? I cannot out-type my computer and i cannot do mathematical functions fater than it, or even excel with all of its overhead.
BTW, my g4 is soooo slow at doing maths functions that i finished an assignment a whole 5mins ahead of a mate. In excel. these were some serious slowdown stuff, 10 cross-referenced, dependently linked, nested functions sheets. Now my mac only has 2 867s with 256ddr, his p4 2.53 with 512 couldnt beat me, WITH WIN95.
Now any more real world tests you would like????:D
