i can put money on it that my 933 would smoke a 300 mhz G3 in anything, including non altivec tasks. One it is a later gen chip, meaning it has more technological advances...it has an L3 cache...and none of this even mentions the fact that the mhz rating is over 300% of the 300mhz G3 (100% denoting equivalency)...if my 933 is only 273% faster than a 300 mhz...im very disappointed.
I was meaning it terms of faster. By pure clockspeed a 900Mhz CPU is 200% faster than a 300Mhz cpu assuming all factors are equal.
I'm just say they're kind of meaningless because of the fact that there's a lot of benchmarks for the audio app I use and all of them put the 933Mhz G4 and similar models at over 200% faster than my 300Mhz G3. This goes without saying, the hard drive controller is faster, the bus speed is twice as fast, the cpu has a far higher clockspeed and the PPC7455 used in the G4 has a faster, larger cache than the one in mine. Not to mention the PPC74xx has significantly faster floating point performance than the PPC750 aswell. I'm just saying that in realworld terms if a 300Mhz G3 had a score of 100%, a 933Mhz G4 would be more like 310%
The same goes for the PPC7410 vs the PPC7450, on the same motherboard a lot of tests on barefeats came out with the 733Mhz G4 barely scraping past or even being beaten by the 533MHz G4.
Here's a link to a table of results for the audio benchmark I'm refering to.
Protools LE 'Dave C Test' Results (http://www.calculatedrisc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ptbench/index.htm)
This stresses the CPU mainly but a SCSI card that handles the throughput of the data with it's own controller chip combined with a SCSI drive adds a lot to the performance. So does lot's of RAM and extension tweaks. Seeing as protools runs under OS 9 right now the OS doesn't have much overhead on the performance but people with dual CPUs don't get any extra performance out of the second one and nothing in protools is altivec enhanced either.
The sad thing is, we've got all the cool plug-ins and nice easy midi and patchname manangement on the mac, not to mention a great OS (9) and a downright fantastic OS (OS X) but an Athlon XP 1700+ with only ATA drives and 256Mb of RAM is about 50% faster than the fastest tested mac. In this test at least, the 2Ghz+ Northwood Pentium 4s and the more recent Athlon XP 2200+ based PCs are so sickeningly fast compared with the mac it's not even funny.

Last week of voting. All votes end midnight this Friday. I'm very proud of the Folding community. A lot of folks from different teams are voting for the little guy.
macman64 (trainguy77) - You're now added to the list. I'm not sure if you want to get in the middle of (Dreadnought) & (redeye be) little dual with each other. It could get bloody.:p
Anyone else want to be added to the list to get my points?

On the 14th of September at the Apple Paris Expo, there may be an update of an iBook, or something. This is from resources that state: 'Knowledge is just a click away: how will you use the new learning opportunities?' It seems like something. What do you think?

Ok before any more people really seriously think that the first definition was serious, here's the real explanation.
The halo effect is the extension of an overall impression of a particular product or trait of a person to influence the total judgement of the product line/company or person.

Now I know what I am going to Say is hard to believe but I am a newbie at things like Folding, so What is it, and is it like a P2P application, and what is it used for... Also can I help?

You don't understand what happened? Allow me to clue you in. Your domain company declared the domain unavailable because it wants you to pay for the name. Check for dogpeepee.com. I'll dollars to donuts that it is unavailable.
It wasn't my domain hosting company that wanted me to pay over the odds, they only charge $20 for the bi yearly registration fee. The company that wanted to auction the name to me is a company that said they owned it. When I typed the name I was after in a browser I was redirected to their website which auctioned off names. In the end it was too much trouble. I checked whether the name was taken by doing an availability search in a few registries all over the world and they all said it was taken.
But a couple of weeks later when I did the same search it was suddenly available everywhere? Is this a coincidence or is it some kind of elaborate scam. Did the auction company really own it? if not how was I redirected to their site. Also how come it was listed as unavailable through all the other hosting services that also offer domain registration. It seems that the auction company *did* own it but it must have only had a couple of weeks to go before it ran out and became available again. Coincidence or scam? I don't really know.

First there is no support for itms on linux as it currently stands and this just allows user of linux to purchase songs from the itms and play them on that platform. It also allows someone like me who has a high speed connection at work to purchase music and take it home with me. Yes I have a couple of mac's and an ipod, so my loyalty hasn't changed.
Secoundly this doesn't hack the DRM that apple supplies, however it does violate the EULA, which I don't know anyone that doesn't violate a EULA at least once a day. But that is really a different argument.
Finally why is there no outrage that DRM is not optional or that there hasn't been a standardized format for music. There are reasons why the mini disc failed and it had nothing to do with quality. But it was a propriotary format that needed to be liscencsed. So when looking at the delima of DRM it should be more of a how do we get everything to play everywhere kind of question then just limiting how the user can play/share the music at home. I really hate being limited for "my own good". or more appropriately for the good of a corporation. If WMA beats apple it will only be because they failed to standardize and work within the industry.

Maybe this is a hint to motorola (and somewhat to IBM) to get a good desktop PowerPC chip out on the market :D
I think this would be a desperate act for Apple, designed only to be used when they're on their death bed
Of course, I doubt that will happen any time soon ;)

This is the worst game I've ever played. Once the cuteness wears off (in 5 minutes) it's boring as heck and has the usual Nintendo lame story to it. My friend told me it stinks, but there are some fun parts. Do methods of gameplay change? I heard you can play SMB as Bowser or something. So far it looks like a wannabe RPG (like SM RPG, which also sucked) where I just press buttons at the right time.
Somebody convince me to keep playing this turd.
The good news is that I picked up Metroid Prime 2 at the same time. Can't go wrong with Metroid!
I got both for $20.

I have also installed it on A late 2006 iMac, Macbook Pro, and a Macbook . All of them have returned units so far.
THe MacBook and MacBook pro fans run at top speed after about 5 minutes of folding.
I have not experienced crashing with any of the compuers. However if you log out of the user and then back in the client will not restart.
A reboot of the computer then restarts the process.

A MacBook can run Windows completely natively. The only thing you'll have to teach your mom will be to hold "option" after she presses the power button.

I agree with you Blue Velvet, you phrase things very well. The problem, I guess comes in how does a designer afford an up-to-date computer, Panther, and Indesign at home on which to learn? (well, legally would be the real question). Furthermore, you cannot switch until the people in charge are prepared to pay for it, a designer cannot just go out and upgrade a business without approval. And when the people in charge are still afraid to spend money and interrupt workflow and upgrade computers and learn new software, well, then you have an agency stuck on OS 9.2. (plus, lets face it, upgrading a small ofiice to OS X and Quark 6 and Adobe CS is going to cost a couple of grand, something a small agency might not have).
I hope the cheaper Quark prices could be some incentive, (as well as the frequent downtime associated with OS 9.2, Quark and old computers) to persuade people that they're loosing more money by not upgrading than they ever will from the downtime associated with switching.

Just passing through... an interesting test would be finding the determinants of large matricies of floats and ints. And I mean finding them by the straightforward stupid computation method, none of the simplification stuff.
Reasons:
1) Too large for all data to be in registers but easily small enough to fit in L1.
2) Takes a long time for surprisingly small matricies (20x20 is a huge number of calculations).
3) Stresses multiples and adds.
4) No massive-yet-trivial compiler simplifications, even for int.
5) The result has meaning.

I read about some new F@H developments this morning on slashdot.
PS3 (http://folding.stanford.edu/news.html)
"...we will likely be able to attain performance on the 100 gigaflop scale per computer. With about 10,000 such machines, we would be able to achieve performance on the petaflop scale." screenshot (http://folding.stanford.edu/abeta-PS3.jpg) video (http://folding.stanford.edu/abeta_2spu_test02.avi)
ATI GPU (http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-ATI.html)
"We are beta testing the ATI GPU client software internally at the moment and will likely announce an open beta in four to five weeks (end of September)."
"Which GPUs will be supported? We have not made any final decisions on this issue. However, our software will likely require the very latest GPUs from ATI (especially now that the newest ATI GPUs support 32 bit floating point operations). Previous work of ours used NVIDIA GPUs as well, but we have now concentrated on ATI GPU's as they allow for significant performance increases for FAH over NVIDIA's GPU's (at least at the current generation). Our GPU cluster has 25 1900XT's and 25 1900 XTX's. We find a considerable performance increase of 1900XT's even over 1800XT's, due to the architectural differences between the R580 and R520 GPU's. Our code will run on R520's, but considerably more slowly than R580. We're very much looking forward to trying out R600's."
Intel on Mac (http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=14182&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=75)
"Coming soon.... 2-3 weeks...
(typed from the intel mac devel box)
p.s. the v6 client won't be as elaborate as planned, but it will be universal. v7 will have all the goodies."
