The reason I spec'ed the Dual 1.25 GHz Powermac to a single 2.4Ghz Dell machine is that at least according to the www.cpuscorecard.com website, these are comparable in terms of speed. Both were given a score of 88-89% (whatever that means).
At the suggestion of onemoof, I went back looked at lower end machines. Comparing a 17" 800 Mhz iMac against a 1.8 Ghz Dell machine (again, based on the www.cpuscorecard.com ratings, iMac=55%, 1.8ghz P4=62%), The Dell was actually the more expensive machine: $2,148.00 for the iMac (including 3 year AppleCare Protection Plan), $2,296.00 for the Dell. The base price for the Dell is $699, but once you add in a 17" LCD screen, a DVD/CD burner, and software that corresponds to all the iApps, the price evens out.
You could even take the $148 you'd save by buying the iMac and get a full price .Mac account. :)
I can print out all the detailed specs if anyone is interested, but trust me -- I am interested in showing that Apple machines are worth their price.
So for "consumer" machines, the iMacs certainly hold their own in price against similarly outfitted WinXP machines. But for top of the end machines, there still is a price differential to be reckoned with.
This makes me feel better -- can't wait for Xmas so I can get an iMac!

85C seems high, I have a 17 and a 20 and they fold 24/7 the CPU runs between 145F and 160F, which is about 72C. What's your ambient temperature and what do you use to get the CPU temperature?
If it really runs that hot, I'd be careful too.

I looked at the JavaScript code that performs the vulnerability test. It's rather strange-looking, like most code designed to exploit a vulnerability. It uses a big array of X's that it fills then strips out all the unprintable characters.

Bulldog attracted a lot of negative publicity last year for poor levels of service and support. The situation may have changed now, but you might want to check that out.
*AlBDamned chimes in with obligatory anti-Bulldog post*
Yep - don't do it, Bulldog and it's parent company are a complete waste of time.
They don't have the staff, technical capabilities, knowledge or even future plans for the consumer arm of the business to fulfill their statements.
I would seriously research other ISPs before settling on them.
Check www.adslguide.org and use the compare function, to see how people have found them.
A few people will tell of good experiences, but most of those people have just Bulldog broadband and not the phone line/internet package they now sell.
It's really not worth the hassle.

Check this out.

It is the PPC 970, a single core and available the second half of 2003. Oh yes, 1.8 GHz. We even learned that IBM will make the Playstation 3 chip, though it didn't state that directly.

Someone needs to convince a game developer to port the code over as a game disk.
Rather than spend $200 on the HD linux kit you could spend ~$40 on the disk and a memory card, and just pop it in and fold.
That is a great idea.

I would tend to agree with you jef. The only people I really know are Alphatech, King Cobra, and asurace/Durandal7. Now with large amounts of users hitting the much sought after '6502' status, I no longer feel the same sense of community that I did when I started posting (June/July of 2002).

The biggest problem is the vertical screen real estate it takes up. If those control panels could be moved to the side so my text can use the entire vertical expanse of the screen, it looks fine to me.
OTOH, I'm really liking Pages, so I doubt I'll be buying this, whenever it comes out.

it's not way more expensive for what you get, but i would like to see ibooks be $999 us and tibooks $1999 for starters
towers can come down a couple hundred and emac could stand to be $999 and imac at $1099
crt imac can go for $599 and os x can go for $99 dollars
but i still prefer the mac os and mac hardware over windows and pc boxes/laptops

Well that's a first. The last forum site I use to use, people always called me a troll when they disagreed with me. But of course that site gets a lot of incredibly insane posts, mostly because it has poor management. :(
That site is www.apolyton.net (http://www.apolyton.net/), BTW.

iphone?
and when are usb2 and firewire2 going to be implemented?
and IBM processors (i know, i know - too soon. but i want one).
and AAC compression in itunes?
just a grab-bag of little treats i'd like to see.
i have VOWED to wait for the 'G5' - or whatever the next step up is - but my G3 tower is looking painfully crap these days, particularly when compared with my bro's dual-gig baby. i want something new, and i want it soon.

I'll buy it tomorrow. I don't trust IGN anymore as far as reviews are concerned. The DS it was a blast, so long as it holds true to the format which even in the review it seems to, plus adding the 2 player battle it still seems like a great game.
Then again this is coming from someone who liked *gasp* Sonic on the PS3 :p
I'll write up a review on this and on Oblivion this weekend for you all :)

This is why apple had to step up and start making their own applications. I have no doubt that apple is working on a spreadsheet app. Hopefully the package keynote, pages, (new spreadsheet app), and filemaker.
One thing that would be missing is a answer to entourage .... Maybe apple could combine mail, ical, addressbook into one app.
