Yeah, cuz that never happens. ;)
Actually, I just wanted to point out to everyone that the G4 uses a 167 MHz FSB, and the new G3 is CAPABLE of a 200 MHz FSB. The P4s use a Quad pumped 133 FSB (533 effective, kinda). The "old" one used a Quad 100 (400 effective). Now the Celeron uses the 400. But they are HOT, and take A LOT of energy to run.
The AMDs used a 100 MHz DDR FSB for the old Athlons and the Durons (200 kinda, because it's rising and falling), and DDR 133 for the "newer" Athlons (which they call 266). No CPU yet uses a 333 FSB, DDR or otherwise. AMD will soon, but it's Vaporware for now. And if DDRSDRAM only adds about a 5-20% increase over SDRAM, even when used properly, do the math.
Do you really think they're getting the full 533 or 266?
Just thought I'd clear that up.
I would go off about MHz myths and pipeline stages and other boring things that are often misunderstood, but I'm tired. And I'd rather not put myself to sleep. I just hope Apple can win oer the newbies with something cheap and easy, and keep the professionals with something fast enough to at least keep paces in some stuff with a similarly configured WinTel.
OS X is great, but if I can render something in 1/3 the time for 1/3 the price, what do you think I'm gonna choose?

I'd love to see a basic G4 tower, but I don't think Apple wants to add yet ANOTHER G4 model which would potentially undermine their existing lineup. I don't want to see the new iMac suffer the same fate as the G4 Cube.
That said, if they did it as others have suggested, I'd be tempted to get it. Here's the specs I'd like to see (based somewhat on earlier posts, so I apologize for duplication):
- a single 1 GHz G4 based on the PPC 7470
- true DDR system bus as well as memory
- 256 MB of memory
- a 32 MB or 64 MB GF4 MX
- base model with CD-RW
- 10/100 Mbps Ethernet instead of Gigabit, and the 56K modem is optional
- the single ATA100 controller
- include only OS X and any freeware/shareware apps by default, but give the option of AppleWorks and other apps at discounted prices
If Apple could do that, and drop the prices on their LCDs as well, they'd probably have a lot of sales coming their way. They'd just have to make sure that their all-in-one systems have incentives for people who don't mind integration.

(Don't be offended if I repeat myself a few times, I want to make sure everyone gets it. Not trying to say anything about you in particular.)
Anyway, you missed my point. I know very well that the G4 is at a hardware disadvantage. I pretty much said that when you see a G4 being beat by margins greater than 4x or 5x, then you can be pretty sure there is ALSO, note ALSO, a software disadvantage. Hopefully everyone will see what I meant that time. :)
I'm glad to see that many people here agree that the G4 isn't really a faster chip than the x86 competition, but I want to see moderation and understanding of the "benchmarks" that have popped up showing an unbelievably bad situation for the G4.
Remember folks, if the test shows a G4 slower than a P4 per clock cycle then the test probably is handing the software advantage to the P4. Note, for perfect clarity, that I said per clock cycle performance and not overall performance.

Funny!
Just don't make a habit of posting links to sites where you can buy stuff like that. Some people may think that you are spamming, then you get banned. But that was funny.

What is this fixation with TVs? Is there something that your TV set needs that you can't get from JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Zenith? ... Where do you see an opportunity for profit if Apple gets into this market?
exactly.
But they should expand into cell phones and a home media center/hub/router/perfect-life-maker type thingy. And I think they will.

I love seeing that video, but every time I watch it I wonder...
There's a big chuckle/applause as he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a floppy disk. Something that didn't get caught by the camera? Something about the new small 3.5" diskette? Steve reaching into the wrong pocket at first or something?
Huge surge of applause just as the large MACINTOSH letters begin scrolling across the screen to begin the show. Coincided with the MIDI of "Chariots of Fire" dropping into that first deep bass note. Is it just because the show is beginning, or is it a more dramatic 1st-time accomplishment to see a computer that can display a font at that point size and scroll it across the screen like that? Surely not in response to the music alone?!
I had that text-to-speech app, running under System 4. Eons before MacinTalk & the rest of modern text-to-speech. What was the name of that silly little app?
Boy, that audience sure did love the looks of that chess game! What is it with chess games that impress Mac users so much? (The 3D Chess game in OS X was constantly being featured in screen shots, too).

Component is more prone to interference and it doesn't have the HDCP token.
The only people who care about HDCP are HD-DVD viewers that are afraid it might SOMEDAY be activated.
It doesn't matter for games or any HD-DVD movies on the market now.

Thanks... I was thinking that it would post when the first WU was complete, and I was right... I checked this morning and it looks like my first WU is a monster... 400 frames that are taking about 13 minutes each to complete on this P4 1.8ghz machine. So, I don't think I will be posting any points until later this week. I'm trying to get these OLD machines up and running work, but the problem I am having is actually a lack of network ports. I need to find an unused hub somewhere so I can get them all online. They are some pretty ancient computers, all the way down to PII's and some PIII's, so I would like to try and cluster them together to share work units.
The trouble is that they HAVE to be Windows (98) boxes, as they are technically spares that have to be ready to deploy to my coworkers if they need a replacement machine while I fix up their normal computer... Any suggestions?

Yes please, where did you come by this image. It does indeed look like a RAID, a big one at that! My only thought is that it would have front screws at the corners, not just in the middle... other than that, it certainly doesn't look fake...

I voted for iPhone too. Mostly just cuz I'm getting sick of the bickering about handsets and the people calling me a sheep because I have a RAZR and other associated nastiness involved in dicussing the cell industry on MR...
Nothing wrong with having a RAZR mkrishnan (I love mine). :)

Jef, maybe I should have been banned ;)
when i first came on here posting in or 2000 maybe as a guest, i was kind of an unofficial moderator and peacemaker and i stayed out of fights and realized we were all here because we like macs
but later on, when i got on with the political threads, then i started saying things ban worthy from time to time, but alphatech and some others were much more hardcore so i didn't seem so bad in comparison
these days, with the mods on board here, people are much better with each other and personal insults are not as common

About 10 years ago I really thought mini-CD-Rs would take off, but they didn't. Maybe mini-DVD-Rs will. I doubt it. Current slot loading drives - like that of the Cube (!) - can't handle small media.
What you're describing sounds like the Nintendo GameCube.
If we are to learn from the Cube experience, we should learn the following:
(1) Power supply should be built-in, like the new iMac, not an external "muffler".
(2) There must be cooling, including some for the video card. Silence is fine, but reliability is more important.
(3) Touch switches have improved, sure - but what was wrong with a power key on the keyboard? It worked reliably.
(4) People want to add RAM and upgrade drives. Make it easy.
You know, all of these things are addressed in the LCD iMac...

Somehow I have this gut feeling that by the time the 1.25s are ready to ship, Motorola's G5s will be heading our way, but not in professional systems. No, they will be unveiled in the iMac, iBook, and eMac. But the prices on the 1.25 PowerMacs will drop significantly as a result and will eventually be phased out as the IBM G5s arrive. :)
Dukestreet, the difference between you and I is that you are focusing entirely on rumor websites (in which many cannot be trusted) alone for your resources, while I am focusing on the rumors but adding in logic and common sense to them as well. ;)

Well, it looks like we've fended of the Knights for now.
last time i checked they were going to overtake us in only 60 days, right now it will take them 637 days! HAHA! :D
We even have another team to overtake showing at the horizon. If we keep up the pase we'll have 'General [M]ayhem' in 762 days. We will have to find a way to stop the knights though. Maybe we should plant some nice, big shrubberies along the way.
It looks like a lot of new members have joined the fold.
Welcome cr2sh_64, rich, mofs, Jeremy, macaddict21, Peewee, BillChase, matperk, Scott_Brown, stevebeam and hob! All these people have joined in the last 7 days. Welcome! And thank you, look at the team stats (link in sig) to see the diffrerence you're making. Output has gone up! Jeej!
We will need more members/CPU time to speed things up, and to keep 'Overclockers Club' from taking us over in 119 days though...
(I thought it'd be best to write the - somewhat - bad news in the end)
