You are correct that differently configured systems will perform differently and a fragmented harddrive will operate more slowly and effect overall performance of the system (when was that in question?), but what is the point of benchmarking systems then? I have no interest in knowing what Joe Shmow managed to tweak out of his DP1gig (without at least knowing what exactly he did!) If you're going to run serious benchmarking and try to make ANY sense of the results and have it actually mean something - do stock configurations or do exact configurations with the only difference being integral system hardware (cpu type, fsb, mobo specs).
I have NO doubt that if you tweak a single 933 to the gills and freshly defragment the harddrive that you could smoke a dual cpu 1.25 with DDR that the harddrive has been written to a gross amount with no defragmentation and has had some stupid resource configurations. But what is the point!?? That in no way accurately shows the ability of a system, its just smoke and mirrors and complete nonsense.
If my idea of tweaking a dual 1.25ddr system was dropping it down the stairs, my 9600/300 could beat it hands down everytime.. but whats the point? ;)
But I agree with you, these guys have flaws in their results. There is I'm sure a bias in reults and I'm sure even a few submissions were doctored, and the results should be used for only a guide - but I'm not even sure that theyre worth that much guidance all together - I think its a lot of bunk.

Just FYI - it's the OS that makes preemptive multitasking work not the CPU (yeah I know the CPU has to support protected and user modes but every CPU in a desktop or server made since the mid 80's has that).

I have Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows XP and you can change the color scheme to blue rather than black. It looks very cool, and when you hover over the buttons, it has a fading highlight effect. It is eye-candy all the way.
All Office programs use that new layout.
It pays to have developer connections. :)

Syracuse.net is offering an internet service bundle with a refurbished Mac. Very interesting idea. And at $200 it is in the right price range to appeal to a lot of PC users. They'll get a taste of Mac and decide if they want to buy a newer one.
Visibility is one of the key issues regarding Macs. This helps a lot.

Just a word of warning to everyone coming to Southlake for this event. Saturday is not just the opening of a new Apple store, but the opening of an entire new division of Southlake Towne Square (Southlake's "outdoor mall"). In fact I have driven through the part of the parking lot that is accessable and have not been able to see the Apple Store as much of this new section is partitioned off to the public and I imagine it will be until the Grand Opening. I don't know what this will do to those planning on standing in some sort of line.
This has been hyped for quite a while and will be the thing to do. There is a parade planned and the majority of the community is expected to be in attendance. Good Luck.

I think that this is correct, if this report is correct:
http://www.macedition.com/nmr/nmr_20020914.php
It goes into how Apple is going to use the new IBM Power4 chip in thier Powermac's, but it will not be released until later in I am thinking MWNY with a shipping date of a month or 2 later. It sounds like it is pretty on the nose.
The only thing is, if Apple does use this chip, then we will know in October, becasue on October 15, IBM is going to be talking about the new chip, and most likely they will talk about when it will be available. Let's hope and pray that they say by Janurary, then we can start the new year with 64-bit Power Mac's!
What do you guys think?

Came to the thread looking for info on that rumored new 360…
…found a bunch of people fighting over format and consoles preferences.
It's getting more teadious everyday to filter the bickering out to get to the on-topic info.
Back on topic. Cooler 360 and not the original DVD drive = more silent 360? I find my original to be a little bit too noisy as I often play it with low sound volume. I'll be waiting for more official info.
Agreed. :o
Yeah, the current white 360s manufactured in or after Dec'06 have the new BenQ drive which is supposedly a quieter DVD drive.
With [these] new 360s reportedly being cooler (but no evidence whether they switched to 65nm processors or not), I'm sure as a whole - yes, these will certainly be more quiet than what's out now.

I'm not sure I follow you. I could have gotten the second printer for free, but I felt that since I didn't have the computer that came with the first one, and since it was a buy a computer get a free printer deal, it would be cheating Apple out of $100 by getting a second printer. Since they refunded the money, see.
well, you "cheated" apple out of $100 by not returning the printer when you returned the computer.

Interesting observations.
Easy DOS It:
Apple's Plan to Provide the Best Darned Windows Experience Anywhere -- Even Better Than Microsoft
By Robert X. Cringely
One part of last week's column on Apple's Boot Camp that slipped past many readers was the idea that Apple would actually start shipping OEM versions of Windows Vista with at least some of its computers. I believe that will be the case and, if so, it is a big deal, and could lead to Apple becoming the biggest vendor of Windows computers to business, which I think is a hoot.
The story came to me, as many do, from a reader. He's the night auditor at a hotel, and one evening around 2AM, found across from his Front Desk seven somewhat intoxicated Microsoft engineers who wanted to order morning wakeup calls. They started talking and my reader asked if Intel Macs would ever run Windows? That's all it took to start a 20-minute presentation (obviously prepared and long-practiced) on that exact subject, how Intel Macs will run Windows Vista very well, thank you. Not only that, but the Microsoft engineers were convinced Vista would be so superior that nobody would need OS X again.
These same seven engineers must have stopped for a drink not long ago at John Dvorak's house because he's been making the same claim -- that Apple will drop OS X for Windows.
That's not at all what I think will happen. Apple isn't going to throw away its clearest point of differentiation and greatest technical advantage just to become another Windows OEM. That would make them little better than Sony and Sony can out-manufacture Apple any day.
Where Dvorak is wrong is he believes Microsoft's version of the story -- that Apple will abandon OS X, at least for business, replacing it with Windows Vista. After all, isn't that what this Boot Camp stuff is all about, enabling the choice of OSX or Windows?
Not really.
The rest. (http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20060413.html)

So your flatmate already has a router? I recommend getting something from the same brand. Apple's AirPort range would suffice but it almost certainly won't extend the range (if that's needed) and they're quite expensive.

I just dont understand some people's perception of upgrading. Its so much more effecient overall to upgrade to the newer technologies. It shouldnt take anybody years to upgrade to OSX. AND, I wouldnt trust Quark's ability to output to PDF on a broke dead dog.
As for Quark 5, we used it. When I first started working here 2 and a half years ago, they were using Quark 4.1. I had never used a page layout app before and thats what they taught me on. I urged them to get Quark 5 (my ignorance on the application itself) and they got it. No different than 4.1 IMO. Then we got 6 later. But, shortly after learning Xpress, I heard about InDesign somewhere and d/l the trial. I really liked it and so I urged them to get it. We got that awesome Pagemaker --> InDesign upgrade and I havent looked back since. I create NOTHING new in Xpress. Only when I HAVE to due to older files, do I use Xpress.

I hope I am misreading your post, because it sounds like you're frustrated with my upgrading history.
NOW I know that OS X is much more stable compared to OS 9, but back then it was a huge step. If something messed up, or if I found out my programs wouldn't work in Classic, then production would be forced to come to a halt until all problems were fixed. I'd rather "put up" with any little problem than to deal with major problems and risk losing my job.
When I first installed 10.1, it did screw up my computer. Many calls to Apple support, posting in forums, etc., but i finally got it fixed.
And as I see it now, there really isn't a reason for me to upgrade. Every printer I have worked with accepted my Quark PDF's, even though they said the file size is a bit larger than normal. Like I said earlier, all I do is place ads and text into a Quark template, then export to .ps, then use Distiller to make the PDF. This operation works FINE for me, and I couldn't see cutting my time in half with anything else.
If you aren't happy with the rate I upgrade, then I will email you my address and you can buy and set up the programs for me.
