The iBook is a great computer.......iPhoto works great, and the CD burner is very fast (so transferring the photos will be a breeeeeze)

But.....the PowerBook is a great machine.....

Here are the pro's and con's

    iBook (the 12" model)-

    PROS-
-VERY PORTABLE (very lightweight and SMALL)
    -solid construction (very durable)
-good power (its only a G3, but tasks get done)
    -much better for traveling

    CONS-
    -small screen
    -G3 (which isn't so bad)
    -smaller harddrive

    PowerBook

    PROS-
-LOTS OF POWER (this thing can run ANY application)
    -awesome for video editing
    -HUGE screen!
-good battery power for its size
    -BIG harddrive

    CONS-
-HUGE (if you want portability, get the iBook)
    -fragile (handle with care)

Thats all I can think off.....

To me, it sounds like you are going to do all your MAJOR stuff on the iMac.......if thats the case, you're only going to use your laptop for on-the-road stuff, which shouldn't be much. In that case, stick with the iBook.....its portable, lightweight, and powerful......if you want to do some serious Mobile Video Editing (or mobile photo shop editing) then get the PowerBook........but if you're only making short iMovies and small iPhoto projects, then you're gonna love the iBook!

BTW----don't bother getting the 14" iBook.....if you want the big screen, then go with a powerbook........also, for transferring files between your computers rapidly, I highly recommend a small firewire drive, like the firefly or something.......

mdouglas, if you can, I would cancel the order. Both laptops will be updates really soon (they are good now - but, I would want the updated models). You might as well wait a while + get a nice new ibook with a 32Mb Graphics card, faster G3.

Well, I think the problem here stems from the fact that with formats only one survives... however with consoles, they all survive (usually) but only one will be #1 of course.

GM still outsold toyota last year, Ed, but Toyota is catching up fast. Toyota is now #2 because they passed Ford recently. GM and Toyota build cards together (the NUMI plant in Fremont, CA) so either company doing well is good for the other.

oh what am i saying? the motorola one starts in 1991, that would make it 8 years older. or is it a case of hindsight? is this roadmap really that old?

Yeah me too. It's one step on the right way up, but there's still a considerably large amount of steps to climb.

    Game invites, messaging, achievements etc....

I figure the 'achievements' are gonna come with HOME, isn't that what Sony had said? With those star wars like things in your room?

I still can't believe that people need to have those  The video game equivalent of a big dick contest.

First post on Mac Rumors. Be kind.
I live in Japan but am an American.

Apple uses the same commercials world wide. The iPod commercials work great. But the Mac commercials just don't seem to work here in Japan. No one really understands what the big deal of PowerPC to Intel is in Japan. Heck they barely know what a Mac is! Why doesn't Apple make commercials that work to the local culture and targets? Other companies do. (Dell is selling big time to young single females which is money target in Japan, just because they show the price of the computer and its ability to do music and play DVDS.)

Then we have iTunes. I love iTunes but feel that every bit of video content is for Americans. Here in Japan. iTunes video content doesn't really exist. Japanese TV is very powerful and people watch more TV than anything. We watch on our phones, we watch on the train, we watch where ever we can find one. When is Apple going to negotiate with non-U.S. companies to supply TV content for local markets like Japan? How about Local music Videos? How about non-U.S. content?

For one thing, the Apple website says that the laptop family is "now complete". For another thing, just think of the confusion the name "MacBook Mini" would inspire. I already confuse enough people when talking about the Macbook and the Mini seperately. "Isn't the MacBook the mini version of the MacBook Pro"? :D

I think you are all overreacting. Have you actually read how it was cracked? Basically play your music, and record it. Replace Napster with iTunes, and the instructions would still remain valid. (but then the itunes drm was _really_ cracked, and it's easier to use hymn than to use the analogue loophole available to any drm scheme)

Personally I think that all the napster bashing is pretty sick.. The more competition, the better. I hate all monopolies, I don't care if it is a stylish monopoly.

Bah, maybe someday there will be a music download service that doesn't lock me in on their platform, that doesn't restrict me what I can do with _MY_ music, that gives me high quality music! A service that doesn't suck to put it bluntly. When we get there, it will be thanks to plain old competition in a free market. Nothing else.

True, the iTMS locks you in the iPod platform (even though that also includes Motorola phones  ), while Napster et al. lock you in the Wintel platform . However... "do the math" (how I hate this slogan), and tell me which is worse: being locked to a digital music player (ber-cool, btw), or being locked to a (decaying) OS?

While the 'dorm' system sounds tyrannical and reeks of sweatshop, it actually sounds like a pretty good setup.

The money that they're making goes straight to pocket with no cost or need to find a place to live.

For those people concerned with the 15 hour days...step out of your bubble and realize that a huge portion of blue collar America works more than one job and easily 15 hours a day.

If you're going to be condemning asian outsourcing, condemn WalMart. They're 10000 times more in the wrong than Apple ever has been.

IMO, this whole discussion has deteriorated beyond any form of usefulness. However, it does reaffirm two points -- never discuss either politics ("laws") or religion ("right" and "wrong") in mixed company. :)

The recent direction of this debate should have been seen as a non-starter -- that is, neither side of the argument is going to win and thus it's pointless to continue.

It does seem somewhat newsworthy, however, that there have been a few reports that the PyMusique utility has stopped working. Apparently you can no longer complete the purchase authorization. Can anyone else confirm this (may or may not be true)?

I didn't see anything really interesting to me about it.
But that's just me. I just load songs on my iPod and listen to them.
    Nothing fancy.

I know what I'd prefer: the inheritance. We all had things as kids we weren't allowed to do while 'everyone else' could. Big deal. A bit of character-building wouldn't hurt.

This is great news - by removing the DRM I can play my music on any device I like. It is my music after all. The music industry needs to get used to the idea that you should really only sell a track once to each user, not one track for each device the user wants to play that track on.

Apple and the music industry in general will continue to rake in the $$$ regardless of this development - the real threat to the industry was always P2P, not sales.

OK, I have been patient, but this is too much! Apple doesnt seem to release new products when a promo for the existing version is in progress. Did anyone notice the end of this new display promo --- DECEMBER 31

I need a new LCD, but, I will not pay the premium for Apple's current displays, which are not technically comparible to other displays on the market. Pixel response time, etc are better on competing monitors. Actually, I woudn't even care about some of the technical aspects as much, IF the Apple displays were a more reasonable price.....$999 for the 17", come on ..... $799 MAX would be reasonable in my opinion!

This almost makes me as mad as ATI not knowing when the h-ll they are going to ship the retail Mac version of the Radeon 9000 or 9700. The 9000 was due last month.

I am sorry if my post is too strong or too anti-Apple, but, I really want an Apple display, and will pay for it.....BUT, I will only pay a reasonable premium for the little Apple logo.

If anyone can offer me any objective suggestions for LCDs or knows of any deals, please let me know.

    Tim
