...I have to believe that Steve and Co. have something interesting up their sleeve because to follow Motorola's plodding updates to the G4 seems like a slow suicide and would be a terrible thing to do to the stockholders and fans of the platform.
Before I get flamed about how it's worth the performance hit and cost to avoid the PCs reputation for more downtime. I haven't a problem like that since NT4 with sp3 as long as I use a top tier vender like dell. The handful of homegrown machines I've built since then have been notoriously twitchy, but is probably more an indicator of my skills as a system integrator not of the platform in general. Some great, true, and sad points. However, you are comparing old Macs with newer PCs. There are other factors besides processor speed that might be affecting your outcome. In addition, I wonder if the software you're using is optimized for AltiVec.
Secondly, I agree that NT4 is notoriously stable. Isn't it a bit sad, though, that M$ofties have to use an old OS to get stability. Nonetheless, it is true that Wintel users can have greater speed and great stability on their machines. It's still not OS X, but if you're comfortable in the environment and get get things done (sometimes more) efficiently, why would you buy a new (more expensive) Mac.
Thirdly, I think Motorola is keeping up with (the bastardaized interpretation of) Mohr's Law over the past year or two. The problem is that somewhere between their speed superiority and today, they lost ground.
I love Apple, but if they don't find a way to catch up, they're dead in the water.

How could those PS3 have such high numbers. They only have 3.2 Ghz Cell processor in them. 3.2 is pretty fast, but it is a Cell proc. Did someone forget to divide it through a 1000?!?One Cell processor is more powerful than Deep Blue supercomputer which is 10 years old. These are one powerful processor.
It's all good stuff. I just wonder if it would have been better if Acorn computers carried on developing it when they had control over ARM Ltd. Development got stuck in the water for many years when Acorn closed and IBM took over.

IMPORTANT The widget doesn't work at the moment, sorry. I'll try to fix it, one day ;) /IMPORTANT
Hello folders and interested people.
I was thinking about a widget to display your folding efforts, a few days after my first thought i stumbled on this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=120057) thread. Apparently stubeeef had been thinking about this before i did.
Anyhow, here's (http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/FoldingTracker.wdgt.zip) the widget (current version 0.5b).
Please read this post through before reporting bugs :o.
The widget has been reported to work in Amnesty (http://www.mesadynamics.com/amnesty.htm), a dashboard for 10.3.9 users (thx stubeeef for testing this)
the front:

the bigger front:
http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/front_big.png
the back:
http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/back.png
a small FAQ (lol frequently)
Set up:
If your Mac didn't do it for you, put FoldingTracker.wdgt in /Library/Widgets
On the backside of the widget fill in your 'numeral user id' I should find a better name for this one.
How do I find this 'numeral user id'?
You can find it very easily by clicking on the extremeoverclocking.com logo. On the right side of the page fill in your folding username. If you found your username, klick it. A page containing your folding efforts will load.

then how about next year?
perhaps, apple is not there yet, but since the topic comes up so much like the lcd imac concept did, it will become an eventual reality
...but by the time it does come around, i don't think many people will really care that much since there will most likely be a g5 powermac, dual, running well beyond 1.5 ghz, with a 4 GB RAM capacity

Sick of applescript programs for video conversion, here's my new Cocoa app written entirely in Objective-C, multithreaded, to encode a variety of movie formats into vcd mpeg1/svcd mpeg2, xvcd, xsvcd, and DVD ready for DVD Studio Pro format.

There is a variety of different options available for todays media afficianado, we find the format to be trusted by the experts, and that maintains the widest range of compatability is MPEG. (Specifically MPEG-1 and MPEG-2)
It has become clear to us that it isn't as easy as it should be to convert the wide array of available media formats to (S/X)VCD/DVD. In an effort to answer a large demand for a simple to use program that encompasses the large spectrum of options available to the Macintosh platform we are proud to bring you Echelon.
Convert multiple files
Echelon delivers the capability of converting a large queue list of files to a variety of different MPEG based formats (MPEG-1 and MPEG-2). It aims to employ all the complex video tools in one easy to use program.
Limitless customization
In an effort to accomodate your personal needs each file maintains its own individual settings. It is also possible to save your favorite presets for future usage.
Fast, Reliable, Simple
We have put in endless hours of research to only allow conversion methods that will solely yield usable end products. We aim to have a harmonious blend of intuitition and simplicity, the things you have come to expect as a Macintosh user.
Advanced User Features
In an effort to meet the needs of the varied levels of experience within our userbase we have implemented an array of advanced features for each encoder included.
Realtime Preview
In addition to intuitive graphical and textual progress indication, the user has the freedom to view the actual frames of video as they are encoded.
Multiple Effect Filters
From adjusting gamma (to be implemented later), to deinterlacing, to denoising we attempted to supply all the necessary effect filters for any of your desired outcomes.
World friendly
We will be localizing Echelon in multiple languages, and are up to suggestion for any localizations we didn't cover, dont hesitate to contact us with more language suggestions.

But these activation codes will be machine-specific, based on your hardware configuration so it's not like serial numbers...
If you don't make a living from it, then ask yourself 'Do I really need this software?'
So how will they work.. wil you buy it and then you will have to connect to the internet and Adobe will check your system and the you will enter a code
I don't really need the software it is just that it is very nice to have and be able to manipulate images and make web pages etc.

Nothing new going on for the past few days. Someone is connecting to XBox Live with my account but it is no longer on my wireless network. I'm getting the feeling that my 360 is no longer in my neighborhood. :(
They still haven't actually played a game on the system though...
On a side note, EBGames called and said they are doing a midnight release for Guitar Hero 2 on the 360. I'm very upset that I won't be able to play it for a while except for at a friend's house.

...Macromedia and Adobe need to forget their past and make things work.
That's an interesting and possibly controversial statement.
Putting Macromedia to one side... what beef do you have with Adobe?
Any apps in particular? And where does the past come into it?
Only curious 'cos Adobe are the people I rely on to get work done...

Still sounds bogus to me.
A no-name company announces a product which has capabilities that no competing product can come close to offering. Yet, prior to its announcement, there were no hints as to its creation. Also, this coincides with PearPC reaching a usable level.
And now, they "delay" the release of the product because of a web site failure caused by many people visiting their site?
I still don't buy it.

Giving you the benefit of a doubt for a moment, I'm thinking it might make sense. If Apple goes with a new chip, they can name it what ever they want. And a 'new' chip should show a progression in the series so that joe consumer is less easily confused when faced with the option to have a Apple (iMac, eMac, Powerbook) G4 or a PowerMac Power5. If it was a Power4 it would just add to the confusion.
So it would still be IBMs Power4 lite, but with a different name to make things simpler.
Now, I'll come back in a few months or next year when its announced and see if it all turns out this way.

I just signed up for Gamefly and I'm not happy already. I signed up Thurs. and it's Sat. afternoon and only 1 game has shipped. Gamefly's site says 24 hours to ship, there is no reason for them to take 2 days to ship something out. Add that to the fact it's gonna take another 4-6 days to arrive from the west coast. So with the return trip, that's 2 weeks out of the month the game is in transit, no thanks. I'm going to cancel after this month.
The same thing happened with us... the first go around of games it took about 2 weeks. The interesting thing was the next time we sent a game back, we got another game in 3 or 4 days. Don't be disguraged, see what happens with the next game being shipped back! I think it depends on either when you ship it, or as said before, they were doing inventory stuffs.

Nintendo's rumble works in a different way to that of Sony and MS, so therefore didn't have to pay a cent to that company that eludes my mind right now.
Immersion :)
I bought an iFeel mouse from Logitech that incorporates Immersion's FF technology. It wasn't on the market for very long, but some (PC) games support it - Most notably, Unreal Tournament.

ahoy, this thread and recent events inspired me to sign up and share and maybe help as well.
i actually stumbled upon this thread from another message board not very long ago, and thought to myself what a terrible situation. well, around 1:30 am last saturday morning, three guys kicked in the front door to my house, went to my roomate's room and attacked him, stabbing him near 13 times. they stole his ps2, my 360 (no controllers or connection cords), my zune, my electric guitar, and the nunchuck to my wiimote. thankfully, none of the attack was fatal and my roomate is making a full recovery. tuesday of this past week, a friend calls to tell me that he sees my xbox live name online. i call microsoft and just like in your case, they are unwilling to give out the ip info, which in retrospect is definitely understandable. as i was on the phone with them, our detective calls me and tells me they found my zune and possibly my 360. the people responsible for the break in and attack had been doing numerous breakins and robberies and were finally apprehended. it ended up being a group of around 6 to 7 people, men and women, adults and teens. the ones involved in our situation are currently looking at 60 years each, and more years added on if it ends up being gang related.
my main reason for posting is this. i live in valdosta, ga. it's barley over an hour away from tallahassee. the detectives informed me that wherever these criminals were caught, they had stockpiles of stolen items, including quite a few xbox's. i know it's most likely a long shot, but from what we've been told, these guys have been up to it for a while. seeing as how we're not that far away, i thought that it may have been helpful. i know that if it did turn up, it'd be like an episode of "lost" what with coincidences and all, but i felt compelled to respond, seeing as how a week ago i read your story about becoming a victim, then i became one myself, and seeing as how it is looking hopeful at a possible return, thought i'd try and pass on a bit of hope too.
and i feel you on the guitar hero. i had only had it for two days, and the disc was inside my 360 when they took it.

I wouldn't be surprised...currently you have to purchase a licence if your computer can receive TV signals.
AppleMatt
no. no. no.
You only have to pay a licence fee if you USE equipment to receive or record broadcast signals.
This has been discussed here before ad nauseum (because it is an important principle), but OWNERSHIP of a device that can receive broadcast signals is not the same as USING the device (which then requires a licence).

I'd be bummed if Apple came out with an iPhone right after I just purchased my Moto v60. I love the thing, but if there was an Apple phone out there, I'd have to have it!

SETI@home uses distributed computing to analyze radio signals received from space, looking for signs of intelligence. It's one of the oldest distributed computing projects around but has yet to find E.T.
I ran SETI, both with the old software and the BOINC version, until I had plenty of units completed (and got a pretty certificate to show off). It worked fine both as a background application and as a screensaver.
I think many MacRumors SETI team members moved on to distributing computing projects in other areas, especially medical research, but I haven't been tracking this forum for a while.
