Making a computer obsolete is a bit harder these days. My G4/400 is 3 years old. It was the low-end tower at the time and it's server admirably as my main work horse. It's getting put to pasture in a week or so when my dual 867 gets here (my wife is getting it). If you're looking to run FCP 3 with all the latest filters then you probably are more inclined to get a faster computer than most people.
Shoot, in a year or so when G4 upgrades come down in price I"ll probably pick up whatever I can get 2-300 bucks and give it some more life.

I think the problem is the reviews, IGN reviews are generally trash.
I think you can say this about all mainstream review sites/magazines. ;)
Gamespot's are usually ok.
IGN is trash, EGM/1up is trash.
Game Informer...what I've seen so far (just started getting their magazine) seems ok.

Cool, now we know for sure that Apple will never use IBM's high end cpu's in any future PowerMac.
Why? They cannot implement AltiVec into Power4 processors! OS X would be slow on those machines because it is optimized for AltiVec, Dual G4's etc. Apple's programmers would have to do everything from beggining and consumers would suffer. No more AltiVec enhanced scrolling, MPEG-2 encoding, real-time effects with FCP, fast iMovie rendering, iTunes...
Not to mention other pissed off 3rd party developers (especially Adobe)! So shut up about IBM chips, its not going to happen! Macs would become overally slower then with G4's.
As for revolution (aka new powermac which is 2x faster then anything before). Well, its not going to happen either. Marketing doesn't allow it, overall manufacturing costs dont allow it and many other things dont allow it. It is always going to be like this.. So, 20% speed bump is best we will ever get, which is ok with me.

(blu-ray drive vs. standrd dvd drive; built-in wireless vs. not built in wireless; free internet vs. not free internet; 60 gig HDD vs. 20 gig HDD; HDMI vs. no HDMI... any questions?)
I have a question... is that all worth the extra $200? I played Crackdown all day yesterday, and it seemed to run just as well on my 360 as it runs on the ps3...oh, wait.:D

Cool. Can I run the AmigaOne OS on my Mac? :)
Only if the AmigaOne OS understands the Apple Boot ROM that all Apple Macs have - at least that's what I'd think would be the limiting factor. I haven't studied or used the Amiga OS much.

No, no, the Athlon in the test was overclockled. That Athlon would not be sold by system manufacturers overclocked that far.
Added: The guy who ran this test even states that a dual 1GHz G4 rig is equal to 2GHz, which it isn't.
On the graphics test, he doesn't even give the Athlon and P4 the same graphics card. That's a very innacurate testing site, IMO.

I would stop buying Apple products if nothing changes. Globalization is bad...
Ummm... OK. You realize of course that almost every electronic device you own has Foxconn components inside it? That'll include your TV, your clock-radio, your microwave, certainly your car and possibly your washing machine as well. Generally, wherever a cable plugs into a socket, the likelihood is that Foxconn made the socket. Look at the label on the inside collar of your shirt - it will say Malaysia, Vietnam or China... made under the same or worse factory conditions. Even if you choose sustainable forest lumber from North America, the nails you use to build your house out of likely came from China.
Unless you want to return to horse-drawn transport and barter locally for your food and clothes, you may want to reconsider.

How could those PS3 have such high numbers. They only have 3.2 Ghz Cell processor in them. 3.2 is pretty fast, but it is a Cell proc. Did someone forget to divide it through a 1000?!?
Maybe because it's got 7 cores crunching the numbers. The PS3 is very well suited for applications like folding.

In the advanced settings of your folding app you can put the processor power, that is allocated to folding, down. Therefore your proc isn't on full load and keeps your laptop much cooler. I would turn folding down a bit if my laptop is my main machine and am leaving it on for 16 hours a day.

hey, do you remember when 'hella' wasnt a word.....those were good times. As long as my new Dual gig with 128MB Gefroce 4 Ti performs better than my 733 with Geforce2MX witch it almost certainly will, i will be happy. On the topic of noise, floyd, are you sure your machine isnt off?

well, they say to make your aac files bookmarkable, but then don't explain "how" to do that. I'd like to know, if anyone can give me a quick pointer.
Go to "Feed Settings" (select a feed and press Cmd-I . It's also in the "Podcasts" menu.)
There is a check-box labeled "Make AAC files Bookmarkable".

I saw this posted earlier (can't find it easily now).
However, I'd trade the ability to own an iPod and use Google while young for a billionaire father any day. Seems like, sooner or later (sooner, given Ballmer's rotundness), you'd be able to buy all the iPods you wanted. Ah, OK, Thanks. I can find the other thread (ballmer kids google), however, I hadn't seen the thread at all this week, so I assumed it hasn't been posted yet.
Also, why does the edit button say "edit/delete", when there's no way to delete it

Hi, all. As a bit of a mac fan (bought my first mac last year) and an avid follower of all the news and happenings with Mac, the latest news of boot camp has got me thinking. With all the articles that quote widely different market share figures, I wondered if anyone had actually paid any thought into the reality of those figures. As an example, when you hear quotes of 'Mac has 4% market share', where is that market share exactly? Is it an overall picture? If it is overall, what is the market share of macs in the home market and business market separately? Does Mac market share increase with home users or is it mostly graphics and video professionals. Anyway, lets hear your thoughts on this.
I'd wonder if one day the market share is say 20% Macs, but 75% home computers are Macs while business computers are made up of 90% windoze (This could make sense if most computers are business computers). This could be a bit of a spin on the market share of Macs. Imagine a windoze die-hard who says 'yeah but macs still have a minority share'. The counter would be 'only in dull business environments'.
(Thank god for OS X built in spell checker - one of the many big things that is missing from Windows)

It's quite ridiculous that a software company keeps releasing a title in beta, time after time, again. It's stupid that they can't even commit to a solid 1.0 build. Until they have something concrete, and besides that, something special and really unique, iChat is the only way to go for me...Especially the new iChat in Tiger...
You're kidding, right? If you you really believe what you're saying then this is quite ridiculous, you're correct.
First of all this is no "software company". These are part time programmers that do something for the community. Secondly, if there are features yet to be implemented this is commonly called a beta. If you do not want to use a beta... don't but stop whining about free software and use iChat like I do.
Oh, and they have something really unique that iChat does not support... they support all the other services too.

So it really does only cost $15 to fill my iPod! I knew Napster was better!
Even less, if you do it in 14-day increments! Napster rules!

Mine was warm with Wii connect 24. But now I dont leave it on standby I turn it off anyway.
WiiConnect 24 is an utter waste really. It's not like it downloads the updates for you.

Yeah, so its a real quick question, but I began folding on May 6th, using one computer (was gonna use two but that one is not on all the time), an Intel P4 2.4 GHz HT model, and have done the following:
41 WUs
~4,000 points
That is about a month and a half (5/6/2005 to 6/24/2005)
Is that normal or WAY too little?
Thanks...
It all depends on the WUs you're getting.
http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html#stats.howcred
In april i finished 70 WUs -> 13,635 points
In may i finished 70 WUs -> 20,226 points
