Manchester United are probably Britain's most famous football club and one of the most recognisable football clubs in the world.This book is a well paced an interesting history of Manchester United. The author is a fan, but tries very hard to remain objective throughout this as he takes us from United's origins as the "Heathens" in 1878 through to the Champions League win over Chelsea in Moscow. The evolving history of the club and Old Trafford is told with many interesting anecdotes and good insight into all the characters involved. As a fan myself I have read quite a few books, but none have covered the history as well as this one. I particularily enjoyed the early years and White's chapter on "The flowers of Manchester" was both moving and poignant.There are some very minor errors but they do not detract from a book that should be of interest to both fans and people interested in English football. What the author does so well is spend the right amount of time on things, he doesn't regurgitate George Best's history, or go through pages of statistics, he hits the important notes and fleshes them out with perfect pace.I picked this up thinking I would dip into it over a couple of weeks, but ended up finishing it in two days. Recommended.

Jim White is obviously a fan of Man U, which might help explain the energy with which he's written this fascinating history of Britain's most famous football club. White digs deep, tracing the club's origins from its founding as the Heathens in 1878, to the present day. There are many books out there about MUFC, but this one is an excellent overview of the history of this wonderful club. (Yes, my opinion is perhaps very biased!) I've read numerous books on the Red Devils, but what I particularly liked about "Manchester United: The Biography" is the organized statistics and photos. It is fairly up to date and goes into club's recent history. The writing style is neither boring nor academic; rather it reads like a fascinating detective novel---turning the page is irresistible! I think I finished the book in two days...I just couldn't put it down! For any non-United fans, well if you want to learn the history of the club and have interest in English football then this is also a pleasant read.

Surprisingly enjoyable history of the club that contextualizes United's evolution within that of the city of Manchester and British culture as a whole. At times, White takes for granted the reader's familiarity with United, but an informative account and good read nonetheless.
