Microsoft won't have a 64-bit version of Windows for the Hammer anytime soon. They will expect you to run the old 32-bit XP. They may even try to slow down AMD so that the Hammer machines don't come out until they're ready; they've shown that kind of arrogance many times in the past and haven't learned a thing from their legal trouble. AMD may bend to their pressure if they back it up with money. But it'd be a long delay; Windows is such a massive mess that, even with thousands of programmers, I wouldn't expect a 64-bit Windows for at least two years.

So what can people run on an Itanic or Hammer computer when they get it? Linux or HP-UX. If Mac OS X was available for those machines, it'd sweep the field.

Alex ant has made some good points on why Macs are a poor buy. They are so much slower and less stable then PC's these days according to everything I read. I still love my Mac, but since reading these message boards over the past year or so I have became more and more negative about Macs. Mac has lost the MHz war and are becoming slower and slower computers and has also lost out to XP for the best operating system, acording to so many people.

I am a consumer user, email, internet, MP3's, MS Word, digital camera photos, etc. I do like the iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie programs for what I do, but it sounds like with XP there is no longer any problems doing these things and they come loaded with programs that are just as easy to use. The sad thing as Apple was working on their switching campaign to switch people to Macs I am now considering switching to my first PC, because they have so much more megahertz and XP sounds so easy to use and stable.

Well I am broke right now so it will be next spring or summer until I buy a new computer, but as Mac has been going backwards on speed and their software is good, but not any better then Microsoft anymore I really should test out a new PC and see how it works for how I use a computer.

Let's play around with this scenereo a little biit shall we? The G4 gets bumbed up to say dual 1.8 Ghz, just to be optimistic. Now the pro line (all duals) tops out at that while the 'i' line gets a 1.6 Ghz G5. Lets look and see how this appears on paper:

Pro line: Dual 1.8 Ghz G4
    Consumer line: 1.6 ghz G5

The average consumer will wonder why the pro line isn't a dual-G5 and why they should spend the extra money for an extra, outdated processor.
Yes, a Dual 1.8 G4 might be more powerful than a single 1.6 ghz G5, but if you just look at the specs, it appears that you're spending an extra amout of money for an inferior processor. :)

    D'OH!

I can't get 0.7 to work. I deleted all my preferences and everything, but the new version still won't work properly. It starts up on the first launch, but that's it. It's completely unusable for me :( Guess I'll just have to wait for the next version. Too bad, because the 0.63 is quite unstable too and I was really waiting for this release.

I am relatively new to Macs and have found Desktop Manager great for use with my 12" Ibook. I only use it at work but it's a great help. I have Lotus Notes on one desktop, Terminal emulation on a second, Internet Access on a third, and Excel on a fourth. While I like expose very much, I find switching to virtual desktops easier for work. At home I just use expose.

    Thanks Todd

I still have to look into power consumption a bit more, but I'm thinking about adding my new PS3 to my Folding farm.
Has anyone done this yet, and/or have you seen any RW performance measurements?

That doesn't mean the AMD is less efficient... from the looks of it, the AMD is just as efficient, just coming out earlier.

The AMD chip is delayed to the same time as the IBM.

Read my freaking post!! Direct from Apple Investor Relations...it can't get much plainer than that...

Q: What is Apple's mission statement?
A: Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online music store.

Well, I do write cross-platform applications. And I use Cocoa. No, Obj C doesn't go "deep" into the core of the application, but Obj C does a fantastic job on the UI. That is where Cocoa lies.

Any application which integrates UI code deep into its code base, be that UI code Carbon or Cocoa or Win32, will not be cross platform without great and expensive effort. I strongly doubt that Photoshop has Carbon any more than skin deep. Transitioning that layer to Cocoa would make Photoshop no less cross-platform than it already is!

Obj C modules link seamlessly to C/C++ modules. Obj C++ (new in Jaguar) allows you to put C++ right into your Obj C code modules, making integration even easier (C++ apps used to have to expose a C API to the UI layer ... now the UI layer can talk C++ instead ...)

If Apple made Project Builder cross platform for Win32, then we'd see some real action in Cocoa (since it is easier than Carbon or other C compilers).

Well, ProjectBuilderWO, the WebObjects development environment (and an extension on the normal Project Builder) runs on Windows as well as OS X. I believe it also includes an Obj C compiler. The problem is that Cocoa itself is not ported to Win32 as far as I know (and the performance hit of using such a translation layer would likely be too great to seriously consider it anyways).

Second, Carbon is no longer insuperior to Cocoa. The only real insuperiority in OS X was the lack of toolbars, drawers, and other specific features. The fact that Carbon apps look crappy is the fault of the developer. And now in 10.2, Carbon apps have access to Services, toolbars, sheets, drawers, etc. It's just a matter of slogging through all the Carbon legacy code and modifying it to look better, work better, etc. Once Carbon developers rewrite the code for their interfaces, you'll barely be able to tell the difference, assuming they follow the guidelines.

Well, that's assuming that said developers are getting something out of their Carbon code. When was the last Carbon update? I don't remember seeing one recently. If you don't need OS 9 backwards compatibility, Cocoa is a MUCH better API than the Carbon kludge!

Email, faxes, instant messages, documents, and alerts pop on and off automatically, but are controlled by the user. Because there is so much screen landscape, the desktop doesn't have a cluttered feeling.

They pop up automatically, but are controlled by the user? Like pop-up ad's? Bad idea if you ask me. I like the notifications in the dock with iChat and Mail. The icon changes, and they can make a sound whenever a new message is received.

As for that much screen landscape, I think it would be hard to control that much space. If you needed it for really big spreadsheets or for tons of tools for designing or creating videos, I can understand, but having to lift the mouse up 5 times just to get from one side of the screen to the other, and turning your head 45 to view the whole thing seems a bit over-done.

Apple is making widescreen standard. Unfortunately, in a bizarre move, microsoft seems to be taking Apple on with the whole wide-screen thing, and they seem to be going over-board. I wonder if they will give you coupons for free neck adjustments at your local chiropractor?

Oh well. In 5 years, I'll probably still be using a Mac...
