I believe IBM have stated that the major improvements in Power5 and 6 over 4 are lumps of hardware to perform tasks that would otherwise have been performed in software (excessive instructions?). For example, ISTR the example quoted was moving most of the initial decoding of an IP packet down into silicon, rather than having to have a series of software instructions perform such a well defined series of operations. IBM is also pushing hard on some of its mainframe OS software approaches - including partitioning, where the one processor appears to be multiple machines and run multiple OSs.
So - to speculate - imagine some silicon acceleration to make it easier to emulate x86 instructions. Maybe the intention is to end up with the ability for Power5 to simultaneously run Linux (or AIX) and a Win32 OS? Lots of cost saving potential for large data centres would probably be the presented marketing advantage.
Oh well, just some gluing together of pieces that might be from different jigsaws.

Where not gaining on them, we were about ~115,000 points now were ~116,000. Im back to 24 hours to give a boost :) needless to say a 1.2ghz iBook :o
If any one who is reading this and has thought about folding, please help contribute. It's for a good cause and the competition is fun :)
I stopped folding for about 6 months and I forgot the fun of folding, it's good to be back :D Plus you feel like your doing something for society in helping curing disease :)
In Crease destroyed about half of a 240 point protein when I uninstalled it (wouldn't work properly).
I should be adding 240 points form the PB today and I wil get the Quad back to work shortly.
Please help people. :)

Thanks for reminding me to reinstall folding. I did a format install for tiger. I don't really pay attention to what rank we are in but it's good to know that we are doing well now.

Any ideas on the next wave of iMacs. Will there be upgrade options for the video card. What will they kick the processor up to. Display upgrade ??? :)

When did this become the PMS forum? People, relax. It is just a light hearted reply in a light hearted thread. No need for a tampon slinging contest.
I was merely pointing out historical fact, there is a correlation. Whether or not this correlation is down to coincidence, nobody knows.
It is very easy to throw insults at another member that was banned, as you wont be getting a reply. I was simply retorting and offering an unbiased reply that was based on factual info.
Eyelikeart, its not like you to be spiteful, tut tut tut. Remember, this is virtual. Its not like judgement day is coming (though if it was, im sure macrumors would carry on regardless)

BUT, I'm an expat living in Japan. One huge advantage of OSX is unicode. My Mac has a Japanese OS, which is great for my wife, but when I'm using the Mac I can switch the user language to English. Much of our Japanese software is also unicode compatible, so we can buy one program that can be used in either of our native languages. This is very cost-effective in the long-run.
I'm prepared to wait until next year when, hopefully, Apple will be using G5 chips from IBM that are much closer to those from Intel/AMD. I don't need my Mac to be the fastest computer out there (the advantages of OSX would bridge the gap) but I want it to be comparable if I'm going to shell out the extra bucks.
I don't really want to use XP. On-line activation and security issues still put me off.
If, however, Apple fail to deliver an impressive new hardware set next year, my next computer may well be PC.
I hope not, but you have to be realistic...
As a rule of thumb, there will always be a faster machine available if you're prepared to spend more, and whatever you buy will become obsolete somewhere between next day and next year. If speed is the only consideration, you'll probably be disappointed whatever you do and whenever you do it.
Decide your budget. Decide what you want to do with it. Find a shop where you can try it and see if it works for you. Work on the basis that you won't get the perfect machine, so decide whether whatever you're considering is good enough. Consider the software you'll want (and it's price!) as well as the hardware. Work on the basis that different people want different things from their computer(s) and get something that matchs your needs rather than whichever gets the loudest shouts for (or against).
And no, I'm not going to try and make a recommendation because I don't know enough about the ins and outs of all the details of what will meet your requirements.

Am I the only one who didn't like gears of war? I just thought it was incredibly boring. I couldn't stand more than 1/2 an hour playing it.
A movie based on it? The only good game => movie crossover I can think of was the tomb raider movies, and they we're only slightly above average. The mario movie was fun in the stuipest sense, but not good in the least.

i really enjoy it here, and <insert pun about my age here> because of my age, i spend most of my time here LEARNING, not helping. the few times i get an opportunity to help, one of the other old skool members have beat me to it! ;) those that post often (such as yourself) are a great resource to us youngens. so thank you!

I was looking for information on some new product, and I stumbled on Mac Rumors, but I never actually found the forum. I was sort of screwing around and causing mischief in my friend's PC forum, and I asked someone about a problem I'd been having with my disk drive. Someone gave me a link here and, needless to say, I didn't go back. :D

Agreed, 2000 vs 4000 sounds bad from a marketing performance viewpoint. But my issue was why are we getting in to comparing the numbers? This way of comparing manages to exclude anything about hardware build quality or software quality. I think the Mac community should be trying some agenda setting of its own regarding quality, rather than having to get defensive about numbers. All these number comparisons avoid many significant aspects and I was reacting to seeing another sub-thread starting on just a numbers comparison. For example, I've spent a while reading Cocoa documentation (not quite enough free time to really get down to interesting coding unfortunately though). So, for basically no effort, every text widget can benefit from text-to-speech and textual summarise capabilities - does MS offer this? These have no direct relationship to the performance numbers, but they strike me as pretty significant (at least noteworthy) capabilities. Likewise, when I'm typing, I get a voice telling me that Mozilla needs my attention and the focus remains precisely where it is until I decide to go and see what was upsetting Mozilla. Heck, I've tried that last item on a range of "generic" users and all have them have responded that they'd like to have that feature available. but nowhere in their reaction was there anything close to 2000 vs 4000 comparisons.
So my argument is that, by only talking about how the numbers are not what they seem, Mac users are ignoring the thing that really makes a difference, namely quality.
See post directly above for AMD Hammer. As for Intel's Itanium, I'm not sure. Let me check. I'll post the number in an edit.
Okay. Intel's Itanium has 6.4GB/sec memory bandwidth as stated here: http://www.intel.com/products/server/processors/server/itanium2/index.htm?iid=ipp_srvr_proc+itanium2srvr& so Apple and IBM are behind the pack already.
The memory bandwidth issue is going to be an interesting debate for a good few months to come. Elsewhere, we had a figure of about 19GB/S for Hammer, but spread across three buses, which makes for only fractionally higher peak bandwidth that either PPC970 or Itanium are talking about. It is very believable that the issue of how fast the CPU is is going to be largely irrelevant because future memory systems are going to struggle to keep up.

I've got one I don't use anymore. It's been sitting around since July when I got the 360. I'll check it out tonight and make sure everything still works, if your interested.
Thanks for the offer, man, but I believe I'm gonna try and get one at GameStop. I like the idea of a $20 extended warranty. Very nice.

In other words --
OS X + x86 = iBankruptcy(Apple)
Why would any software maker consider making software for Apple's OS X on x86?
They could put all their effort into a Windows version, and let the user dual boot their PC to use it.
Why should they worry about developing an expensive Apple OS X/86 version? Especially when you'll be happy buying the x86 copy anyway.
Save some bucks and kill the Apple OS X/86 software development and make the shareholders happy with increased revenue.
