Hi. Been trying to fold on a brand new Dual 2.7 G5 using the folding script, but I seem to have run into one or 2 issues. The first is that, even though the processes seem to be backgrounded, when I quit the terminal, they stop. The second (possible) problem is that they seem to be working on the exact same protein, which, from what I've seen before, is either incredibly unlikely, or a conflict. Anyone have any thoughts?

lol oh no the history major has spoken. i enjoyed the brief recap you gave about the revolution and apple's history but that wasnt what i was going for. im strictly talking about the two men themselves.
As the french revolution proceeded, Robespierre came to associate himself more and more with the essence of the conflict at hand. In the revolutions worst years, Robespierre was often noted to speak of an illness he acquired, he said that his life was not interwoven with the revolution. through the massacres and even the terror, Robespierre defended these acts b/c he was convinced that they were needed for the revolution to really come to fruition. i believe Robespierre compromised himself to become this greater cause, and went to extreme lengths to excuse the revolution and allow it to proceed uncontrolled. extreme? yes. but i feel robespierre really did come to represent the cause and errors that were the revolution
now i say robespierre and jobs are alike b/c jobs seems to be apples own "personal representative". Like robespierre, jobs is known for being difficult to work for. strictly b/c jobs refused to compromise the goal of apple in any way, and robespierre did the same by excuses the murders. the two characters persist in thier cause and like wise meet opposition from within thier own cabinet. thats some of what i think

one neat thing about it- it is water cooled with a radiator, i bet it is quieter than a fan.... although our cube needed no fan or radaitor.

if this new device is an iPhone or something, Apple might make it a full on multimedia phone, colour screen and the works, and they could also make it way smaller than any of the competitors phones. i reckon that would be the only way that they could get into the phone market.

I don't have a mac yet, but I am still using a 266Mhz PC and it runs everything that I need pretty well. (for a Windoze machine)
The computer industry is getting to the point where there is no need to upgrade to faster machines.
Really, how much speed do you need? That's the question you need to ask.
And a Mac never becomes obsolete, just sell it on ebay, someone will buy it!

My experiences with SKYPE were ALL awful, i found that it does not work and I have followed the guides for firewall settings and so forth.
At present SKYPE has a long long long way to go.
People and companies tend to overreact on any emerging market. :p ;) :)
I will still keep my land line since and when the electricity goes out you will not be able to use VoIP, unless you have a generator. :)

Also, if you guys can assure and walk me through it, I will GULP, fold with my iMac G5 at home when it just sits there sleeping. I am away from home about ten hours a day, and use it only about 2-4 hours a night.
I would go for it - it can't hurt - especially if its under warranty. It will burn in the G5 CPU for you - if it runs well for a few days, you're good to go. I folded on my G4 powerbooks for a long time - yeah, they got hotter, but not unbearably - unless you actually put one on your lap. :D

I've been reading a million threads about people thinking that apple may port OS X to x86....not a chance in hell. However, seeing as motorola is lagging, I do have another option. It seems to me (and someone may have already mentioned this) that at it's core, the athelon is a risk processor...that emulates x86. I'm pretty sure this is true because I spent hours reading tech documents on it a few months ago. Since the chip is a risk chip, It ssems to me that it would not take a ton of work to create a athelon chip that would run OSX (with some root os changes as well). And since this chip would be running pure instead of having to emulate x86, I'd think it would be even more powerful mhz for mhz. I could be completely off base though

It doesn't even really look that great. You have to purchase an entire kit (hd, kb, mouse, DVD,...) just to run linux on there :(

That's strange, the console version should be a bit faster then the gui version. Especially on older/slower machines. All of the cpu power goes to crunching the WU, there isn't a bit that helps the graphics card making the picture, so the console version should be faster.

Good new thread! Here some answers that I can give you now:
I have Windoze 2000 Pro, and it's not on 24/7, only 10 hours a day.
When opening the GUI for the first time today, and after setting my prefs, it started downloading the Gromacs core. That works, I could always download a core. After that, it is trying to download a WU, but it doesn't get a connection. I will post the log tomorrow and try to open a command window (that's new for me in Windows...).
I am at work now. The only box checked in IE is the "take the configuration of IE automatically over", losely translated from Dutch, it's the first checkbox.

This would allow the Cube to decrease in size immensely. Mini CDs and DVDs are only 80mm (roughly 3 inches). Most software is still on conventional CDs, and so the miniature DVD would still be able to hold more than a CD. Granted, most developers wouldn't appreciate the switch to DVDs.

Interesting idea, but it would be expensive since almost nobody uses them,
Plus, like you said, developers wouldn't go for it. They're not going to spend extra money on a new-unproven format.
2. G3 Processor
The 750FX produces very little heat and consumes very little power in comparison to the G4. Performance wouldn't be the issue of my concept-Cube.
Somehow I think that people would want more than a non-Altiveced G3.
Maybe the Sahara chip with some sort of Altivec, but not the G3 used in the iBook or the CRT imac.
It may be small and cool-running, but with the amount of people bitching about slow Macs noe, imagine what woul happen if they announced a Cube with a G3.:eek:
3. Laptop Hard Drives
Yes, they're slower, but they consume less power and also produce less heat. However, they would likely be suitable for non-Power users and simple iMovie work.
Now that's a good idea. You can get them up to 5400 RPM now so performance wouldn't be top-notch, but it chould be fine for everyday use.
I wonder how hard it would be to made a 7200 RPM version of a laptop drive, it would probably be hot though, my IBM Deathstar will burn you if you don't let it cool down first.:(

If you need more, buy a USB or FireWire hub. Cynical yes, but space saving, also yes.

It sounds as if the install process isn't detecting your default shell and putting the aliases into the correct config file.
I haven't looked at his installation script, but if you don't hear from him within a few days, let me know and I'll download one of the packages to see what I can do.

...and I agree with you. With Dell coming out with 2.2GHz laptops, I think $3,500 is an awful lot to charge for 1GHz, OS X or not. I don't feel like paying all that extra money JUST for the OS. I mean, so much for the cheaper price of OS X compared to XP.
