Apple have frequently been on Technology page of BBC News.

In fact, BBC has been accused of being too Pro Apple because of the exposer they ( Apple ) have been given. Quite pathetic, IMO.
Personally, I think there is a pro-mac bias at the BBC, but not in a non-impartial way - but they do push the stories.

It's easy to rebut that some of the above will not be directly affected, but every bump in the status quo creates a ripple that might grow out of hand.

InDesign by itself cannot solve all of these problems, merely because it is OS X compatible.

ever heard of PDF workflow? I don't understand where you can get off making dangerous statements that seems to inexplicably link Quark to the d-2-p presses and imagesetters.

Archives of editorial/ad material? ID does a DAMN good conversion. 98% on complex documents, simple docs, 100%.

I converted a 40+ page catalgoue from a Quark file to ID, did all the redesigning, floated in new pics, made some new graphic work and didn't need a gajillion EPS files, produced one high-res PDF file, and emailed it to my printer. It worked flawlessly. They can then take the PDF and make their press sheet from it. Do their little offset printer thing. And yes, I send these to people who use new direct-to-plate machines, old school offset machines, 2 color, 4 color, 6 color and 10 color presses AND even a good ol' color copier.

Have never had a postscript problem with ID, baby. Quark? Seems to crash their machines thrice daily.

On the plug-in issue, let's face it. Quark should have 99% of the functionality that you have to pruchase via plug-ins. I mean, come on! $700 for a program, then you have to shell out cash to make the f*ckin' pasteboard bigger????

Or god forbid you typeset in, say, german. You then have to pay $1499 or whatever for Quark Passport. ID? Has ALL the functionality one could need built right in (i.e. no plugins), works seemlessly with a PDF workflow, making it supremely compatible, has international dictionaries (for those big-time print jobs that I often get where I have to typeset in german, spanish, italian, etc. This opposed to the ink-jet ones you seem to think i work on) , and costs about $700 less, after buying plug-ins to match ID for fucntionality and the "passport" version of Quark.

Oh. But i can fo html in Quark. That's such a useful feature of 5. I'm pissed I wasted my cash on Dreamweaver.....

Its interesting, but until they actually deliver it, well, its a wait and see item.

How about $300 desktops and $600 laptops?

I knew this wouldn't take long, why is it that people just can't accept the fact that Apple products are worth their cost. Must be a PC thing, because every PC user I know throws that in my face. They think everything should be little or no cost, face it, Apple is a quality machine not some POS box made up of cheapest bidder parts.

On the original poster's thought....NO. They shouldn't expand into products that don't integrate well with the Mac.

It is not the law that made iTunes music incompatible with other MP3 players, it's the file format and DRM design. Further, Apple has done nothing illegal in its choices and implementation. There is therefore no legitimate reason to break the law--your rights are what you agreed to when purchasing the music and nothing more.
By that logic, women would still not be able to vote. Look at other societies that do not allow people to protest "unjust" laws. Compare where they stand to where we stand. I am simply trying to take us further still down the road of freedom for all humans. Anything that acts to restrict the natural association of humans is a Bad Thing. DRM, by definition, falls into this category.

DRM does not, in theory, infringe on your license rights.
Again, I am bound by these laws but I do not need to AGREE with them. Do you agree with them? [That is a direct question btw.]

Your freedom of choice comes with certain sacrifices
All actions (free or not free) require sacrifices. So what is your point?

and restrictions, none of which have been imposed on you illegally or prohibit you from legal use of the product. The only reason to break the law here is for the purpose of breaking the law, not for any delusions of your rights to do as you wish with music.
Option A (Legal Participation): Buy the music and abide by the laws
Option B (Legal Non-Participation): Don't buy the music and not be subject to any laws
Option C (Something Different): Think for yourself and live life according to your own laws

I will take C cuz it allows for both A & B while reserving my ability to think for myself. Even if I end up the same place as you, the journey I took to get there will make all the difference.

Since then, I've tried Firefox and can see that it's nice in many ways--a great choice on Windows--but not enough to tempt me away from Safari.

    wrylachlan:

64-bit color depth would presumably mean 16-bit fields for RGB and one for Alpha, and this would not be ideally suited to math as a single 64-bit integer. It would, however, work very well in AltiVec which would treat it as 4x16-bit fields just like it really is. AltiVec could even do two 64-bit color operations per operation since it can handle 8x16-bit fields at once.

There is also the fact the people were looking at the new PM motherboards and saying...hmmm...this could be used for something else...

Also, if IBM is going to mass ship the the chips in 2Q then Apple already has the engineering samples...

The 970 is already more than a prediction by most of the MacRumors gang. So, I'd like to provide a comparison of the Apollo and our potential G5.

    G4 - Motorola's Flagship Chip
Motorola has only been able to produce a 1.25GHz (that is apparently available). But, the G4 has a few advantages going for it. The G4 has Altivec, only sports seven pipeline stages, and supports two megabytes of L3 cache.

However great those improvements may be, however, they are not enough to fight off a pathetic 166MHz system bus, the P4s SSE2, and dated manufacturing method.

970 - The Chip We'd Like To Call The G5
The 970 from IBM is an excellent chip, and if it were released by the end of the month, would still battle fiercly with the P4 and Athlon. However, the 970 probably won't find itself in production until the second half of and likely will not find any applications until early 2004.

Still, I like to be optimistic. If the chip is initially available at 1.4-1.8GHz, Mac fans would gain a significant performance hike over the G4--even if it is unable to beat Intel and AMD's offerings.

    7455
    - Up to 1.5GHz (overclocked)
    - 166MHz System Bus
    - SDRAM Support
    - 2MB L3 Cache (1/4 Processor Clock)
    - 256K L2 Cache (Full Processor Clock)
    - Altivec
    - 32-bit processing
    - 180nm manufacturing

    970
    - Up to 1.8GHz (IBM claim)
    - 900MHz System Bus (450 x 2)
    - DDR RAM Support
    - 512K L2 Cache (Full Processor clock)
    - Altivec
    - 64-bit processing
    - 130nm manufacturing (90nm rumored)

Mac has lost the MHz war and are becoming slower and slower computers and has also lost out to XP for the best operating system, acording to so many people.

I am a consumer user, email, internet, MP3's, MS Word, digital camera photos, etc. I do like the iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie programs for what I do, but it sounds like with XP there is no longer any problems doing these things and they come loaded with programs that are just as easy to use. The sad thing as Apple was working on their switching campaign to switch people to Macs I am now considering switching to my first PC, because they have so much more megahertz and XP sounds so easy to use and stable.

Well I am broke right now so it will be next spring or summer until I buy a new computer, but as Mac has been going backwards on speed and their software is good, but not any better then Microsoft anymore I really should test out a new PC and see how it works for how I use a computer.

Or I have a better Idea: Call / Write Apple and complain about what you get for your hard earned $$$.......if enough people do, they will listen.

I for one am not ready to move on to PC....as I would have to learn Linux and find Linux versions of all my software....Windows XP never!

I had to laugh when I saw this Top 10 Windows Downloads (http://www.download.com/3101-20-0-1.html) list from CNET.

The top 10 consist of:4 apps to deal with spyware

1 app to fix problems in the Windows registry (problems caused by spyware?)

3 apps to share files on the Internet (files such as spyware?)

1 app to package files (so you can share them on the Internet?)

1 app to chat with people about dealing with spyware, fixing the registry, and sharing filesIf PC users spend all their time defending and fixing their PCs, then who is actually producing anything useful?

    My guess? Mac users!

Has anybody measured what percentage of the time PC users are creating anything of value (real work) rather than spending their hours fixing problems or dealing with software maintenance, crashes, and other efforts it takes to keep the computer in a state where, in theory, they might be able to do some real work?

Do those numbers differ for Mac users, as some of us would like to assume?

I don't know, a BIG focus of Apple has been 'Digital lifestyle', right ? And TV is not all bad if you watch it intelligently/actively, meaning you don't just sit down and watch TV to watch TV, but chose the content you want to watch. Record a show/program, cut out the ads, archive it etc...just don't let the TV stations impose their schedule on you.

But you are right, passive TV=bad ;)

There are some restrictions on Apple Store people that don't necessarily apply to everyone else. Here (http://chuqui.typepad.com/teal_sunglasses/2006/04/what_i_do_for_a.html) we can see an example of a long time employee giving up the goods on one of the deepest, darkest Apple secrets of them all.

I could add maybe 5 more CPU's to the cause. I'm a bit reluctant on user comments (more heat, more fan noise).

Anyway I've had my fun here for now. I think it is settled that the G4 does poorly at this particular float test. I've done everything I can think of and gone though all sorts of variations of the loop trying to increase the IPC but I could never make significant headway on either the PC or the Mac.

That said, this test is essentialy a test where we do 400000000 double precision square roots which we don't even store and nothing else. There are no memory access, only very predictable branches. I have radically changed the loop and compiler flags and essentially nothing besides the sqrt() makes any difference.

I do not regard this test as important in the overall picture. It does not illustrate anything important to anyone, unless someone sits around doing square roots all day.

I might also add that designing a meaningful benchmark is very hard. I think SPEC is about as good as it gets, and yes the G4 looses in floats there too. :)
