I agree with MyMemory that Jaguar is not:
1) As compatible
2) As friendly
3) As fast (I added this one)
... as Mac OS 9
HOWEVER, it's certainly more reliable and flexible. This is especially true from a developer's standpoint.
Given the maturity of OS 9's interface, it's not at all surprising that OS X is lagging a bit on the usability front. The devil is in the details and any programmer knows how much complexity actually goes into the details.
But, the fact is that OS 9 was a dead end for Apple. There are only so many hacks you can get away with before they start to catch up with you. While OS X lags a bit now, it will progress much faster than anything built on 9 could and we will all be better off a year or so down the road.

I don't know whether this is still possible, but you used to be able to swap the Windows version for a hybrid, for a small fee (I think it was US$10). You keep the same serial, and just get a new CD.

I believe I've read Apple makes the bulk of its income selling hardware. MacOS X is the software that makes that possible. If Apple permitted standard PCs to run MacOS X, several things would probably happen:
1. Apple hardware sales would initially plummet, killing Apple's revenue stream.
2. The user experience using MacOS X on Intel would be terrible as Apple would then have to deal with the plethora of hardware incompatibilities in the Wintel world.
3. Apple would be seen as a direct competitor to Microsoft, creating the expected Microsoft reaction, and subsequent marketing campaign pointing out those problems and how they work better currently using Windows XP, so why change?
4. The world would then realize that the reason that Apple's products have been so good is that Apple controls both the hardware and the OS, and stop buying the Intel version of MacOS X.
So, would Apple's $4.3B last long enough for this trauma to work its wait out and permit Apple to return to its closed hardware/OS solution?
It's an interesting thought, that of Apple Macs and Intel Macs in the marketplace. Would Microsoft stand by and permit this? Microsoft has never failed to use its monopoly clout to squash/influence competitors in the past, and I don't doubt they would have private talks with software developers would might think about developing software for this new platform. I think we could forget about Office for Mactel, or Office for Mac, for that matter.
A more realistic, if still far out alternative, is that Apple is simply covering its bases by preserving the ability to switch processors, while retaining control of the box. This means replace the PPC with an Intel chip, maintain a Mac ROM, continue to sell an integrated package that's better than a Wintel solution. That probably wouldn't be as compelling a solution as today's PPC-integrated box, but it would allow Apple to continue selling hardware.
I don't think we'll ever see Apple offering the MacOS to the generic Intel world.

If you're going to burn to CD, then you burn directly from the WAV. Your CD will sound as good as playing the original WMA file. If you re-encode as mp3, then burn to CD you'll have further signal degradation.
If you want to store the music on your computer, you take the slight hit in sound quality and re-encode to mp3 or whatever format you want.
Ive never re-encoded music before, so I don't know how signficant the sound difference is. Of course, the previous crappy Sony players required you to re-encode ALL your music to go on the player... :p

Anything that passes on the AIM servers they can do what they wish. So it means any chat client is affected and they don't need to notify you what so ever.
I see that the .Mac terms and conditions haven't changed for 2 years. I'm not sure that I've ever 'signed' an AIM or AOL agreement (I use a mac.com AIM address), so does AOL even have the right to snoop around without telling me?

Why would apple want to announce new PowerBooks at their Paris show??? It makes no sense because it would undermine the discounting that they are doing in the educational store. Why would someone by a notebook they know will become the "old" model in only a few weeks time? The only way I could see that happening is for apple to further discount at that point and that would erode their profit margins too much and set a precedent that people might wait for in the future i.e. they know if they wait till the end of the product life they can get the machine DEEPLY discounted. This scenario would be horrible business practice. That being said, this is just my opinion, but I think everyone is going to have to wait for another month before the announcement of new PB's.
NOTE: Remember how Apple is trying to get away from computer releases at shows and how the new PowerMacs were released a month after the NY show on the back end of a discounting program.

Thankyou, I didnt say state of the art. If you knew -zip- about computers then you aren't going to get the best of the best. your going to get the cheapest new computer you can afford. I know, I had an LC630, then (sadly) a PC and now i have a cheapo PC (hey, i have ordered 2 brand new G4s and didnt have enought left over for a PB).

The Macintosh IIVx came with up to a 400MB hard drive in '92 and I've never known Apple to use the biggest drive available in any of there computers. Though I do agree that his later sizes seem small by comparison. 4years ago should have 6-10GB and today should be between 80 - 120 GB. Just look at what the new towers are shipping with on the base systems.

personally, i like medium population servers. with high population, there's a queue sometimes, with low population servers, i can't find groups for instances and such.

Back when I folded 24/7 my iBook 12" survived. It did fine for the months that I folded, and during the Australian summer. The fans kick in a lot, so at night time when I needed sleep, I place the iBook on the low processor option.
As a side not this is why I don't fold anymore (doing 1 WU to help team at) it becomes time consuming, annoying with the fan and etc :(

Apple will need to add a few extra Xserves to add DRM to the files before it uploads it to the end user. More bandwidth and processing power required to circumvent this hack. Or, iTMS would require post authentication to authorize the purchase or the user account gets suspended.

I am amazed by the level of apathy here. It seems that Apple will simply be able to ignore the issue, since even in a community of followers there is little interest in discussing the issue to any great extent. Outside of this community the issue appears to have died away. How sad it is that we feel no responsibility for our actions anymore.

Two other designers are totally afraid to upgrade to OSX. They are using Quark 5. And the three others that lay out books and publications still use Quark 4! One of them is still using a power pc! They are DEATHLY afraid of any type of change whatsoever. Why does this piss me off? Because they're total lack of ambition when it comes to keeping up with the latest technology is dragging me down.
I know a few places like that that only moved to OS X when they had to, when one or more of their ancient Macs crapped out. The learning curve for them wasn't anticipated and they really struggled...
A planned and scheduled roll-out with some time set aside for training is the best way to do it.
What it takes is someone with the guts and drive to force it through and to point out to the money people that it's just storing up problems for later while key staff keep their heads in the sand.
