I actually remember that thread King Cobra. Ouch. No wonder you didn't want anyone to look at it.

In other words --
OS X + x86 = iBankruptcy(Apple)
Why would any software maker consider making software for Apple's OS X on x86?
They could put all their effort into a Windows version, and let the user dual boot their PC to use it.
Why should they worry about developing an expensive Apple OS X/86 version? Especially when you'll be happy buying the x86 copy anyway.
Save some bucks and kill the Apple OS X/86 software development and make the shareholders happy with increased revenue.

Well I have got a massive 404 pointer, don't expect points from me for another 18-30 days depending on how long I leave the Mac on :) I guess it's better than nothing.

The optimized builds (well at least mine (http://camino.ilnm.com)) aren't based on the same code as 0.8.3, but off of the latest code.
but won't the latest optimized builds be based on 0.8.3? or is the latest code not the same as the 0.8.3 code?

Sounds like fan speed management software might be able to keep that big fan from needing to crankup to the max every few minutes if someone's software solution told it to blow slowly all the time instead of freaking out every few minutes due to no blowing in between spurts.
Looks like an Apple .1 update could include this fix or a third party freeware item.

When Alphatech was aboard MacRumors, he was awesome in 2001 and early great in late all right in early 2003... he's one of those people that takes no bulls*** from others. During 2001 and into much of MacRumors was a small community with few people at 1000 posts, and few stupid people/total newbs existed back then to get on his nerves. But what happened was he got fed up with people and/or newbs that didn't read his posts correctly, didn't answer his questions, tried arguing with him when he was right, etc., epsecially since the number of arguments that occurred/number of people that gave him a hard time increased. Effectively, he got real sick of it and moved over to the pub.

Often the office I work at gets quite cold, so I offer this possibility. Yet another astounding innovation from apple, dual processor super computer / place heater. Perfect for keeping your feet toasty those cold winter days...

What brought you back?i'm in charge of a lab installation at the university that's being upgraded. the machines folded on by me and rowercpu over the years were 1ghz pcs. essentially my total and his up to march is the output of the same machines under different names. while in 2001 these machines put out a lot of units, they are slow by todays pc standards. one of the new machines probably is like 3 or 4 of the old machines
they should be up by friday at the latest

it appears that the OSX group's numbers tanked, and remain low at near the same time Macrumors did, while more PC based groups do not show such drops.
do we have any data on what the machine makeup is for MR and OSX, vs. the "PC based groups?"
16 of my 19 CPUs are PCs.
have you looked at the page that shows member participation? perhaps participation dropped and the tinker correlation is coincidental.

Oh no no I didnt mean you were bragging. I mean't I'm litteraly Jealous of you.
Jobs I can find that pay 9+ you either need to work construction, which no offense but I can't speak Spanish (its texas), or you need to work as a Telemarketer.
Night shifts at walmart might get that pay also, but I'm not sure.
I go to a community college right now so there is no housing help what so ever and the cheapest apartment with in 20 minute drive is 650 a month for single bedroom. With 16 hours for spring semester there was no way I could survive on the pay most places pay here... That is why I am jealous becuase if I was making 9+ oh man...
Sorry to hear about your dilemma- although, it is one shared by the vast majority of college students. I certainly count my blessings.:)
Although, my extra money usually goes to financing my addiction to all things Apple...... :D

Concerned about my adoptive dad's memory loss, I started folding in 2002. I know that it won't help him but it might help the suffering of those who are caretakers and sufferers in the future.

I wonder what that's all about :(
Doesnt really matter though, since that's from 1996.....

Well yes, usually I delegate the number crunching to computers, and don't sit at home spinning a little crank to crunch the WU by hand. And do you know that not a single person responded to my call for justice?! They missed the chance to be a part of my glorious SETIvolution!
Call for justice...?
More like a call for your glorious exploitation....

MacRumors has changed too much.
No I'm not just blabbering on and on, there was a community, of friends, of people you know and can talk to.
Now -- Its just like on random threads people are really really nasty.
I mean even just repost, people can yell repost, but its more like 'Why the hell did you repost this... God I've seen this 10000000x times... Geez this AGAIN!'
I mean it was alright before if you just didn't talk to people outside the forums, but now its not even like people want to talk to anyway.
Members don't care much about the forums or apple or anything specific there are -- they are all just here.
I mean it just happened right before the forum change skins, everyone started to get nasty.
I dunno if anyone can be done but heck I remember were members would get their birthday posted in community disc. but not anymore.
Just like today for my birthday.

The floating point instruction set architecture of the x86 (silly stack based thing) is/was a naff design decision. I don't even know whether there are alternative routes to accessing FP ops on an x86 these days, as its ages since I've been interested in that level (tad of compiler writing in my history). [Intel did always work pretty hard to get IEEE FP conformance though, which is more than most other CPU mnfs.]
The limited number of GPRs is also a design flaw that has largely been worked around.
Maybe the best way to get an understanding of what Intel privately thinks is good/bad about x86 ISA is to look at what sorts of x86 instructions get translated into what sort of micro-ops internally - the larger the change, the less Intel like their original decisions.

Why would you bother encoding them as WAVs...I mean, the music has already been compressed, so saving it in an uncompressed format is pretty much a waste of 20+MB.
If you're going to burn to CD, then you burn directly from the WAV. Your CD will sound as good as playing the original WMA file. If you re-encode as mp3, then burn to CD you'll have further signal degradation.
If you want to store the music on your computer, you take the slight hit in sound quality and re-encode to mp3 or whatever format you want.
Ive never re-encoded music before, so I don't know how signficant the sound difference is. Of course, the previous crappy Sony players required you to re-encode ALL your music to go on the player... :p

Well yeah I would think that Apple will continue to keep the i and e consumer lines on the 745x series of processors when and if the PowerMac goes to the PPC 970, so the chip will continue to develop much like the PPC G3 750 has since it left service in the B&W G3 towers.
