Sadly it doesn't even seem to want to connect any more...

    Frown :(

Shame... I have soooo many PowerPC Macs just lying around being sad.

That said, this test is essentialy a test where we do 400000000 double precision square roots which we don't even store and nothing else. There are no memory access, only very predictable branches. I have radically changed the loop and compiler flags and essentially nothing besides the sqrt() makes any difference.

I do not regard this test as important in the overall picture. It does not illustrate anything important to anyone, unless someone sits around doing square roots all day.

I might also add that designing a meaningful benchmark is very hard. I think SPEC is about as good as it gets, and yes the G4 looses in floats there too. :)

I'm in the process of figuring out vMathLib. I'm a Java guy, so all this Altivec stuff looks totally foreign to me :(

Never the less, once I get it working, I'll share the results with you folks.

Also: If anyone here wants me to try something, G3 vs G4, or whatever, aside from the square root and integer mult, let me know. I'd actually like to make full featured cocoa app full of test suites.

So has anyone actually used this yet?

Or is everyone using QemuX? (Which is horribly buggy on my Powerbook, at least)

Interesting, I use Westpac (although I'm in NZ, not Australia), and I haven't had any problems whatsoever with Safari.
With both Mozilla and Safari (don't know about Firefox), there are undocumented procedures to enable a "debug" menu which will (among other things) let you configure the browser to lie about its identity.

In many cases (but not all), this is enough to make an unfriendly web site work. Many times, the site contains scripts that simply check a browser version, even when the actual page content will run everywhere else.

Let me clarify a few things regarding seanyepez at MacNN forums:

    1. He initially quoted two independent sources and said he wouldn't have come forward unless they both provided him with the same information, which they apparently did. Then said a third backed up the previous two. Not 4 or 5.
    2. He is actually 14 or 15 years old and not in college.
    3. He has his email address in his sig file so he's really going to take a beating if he isn't correct at least on an announcement.

For the record I'm extremely skeptical, but until tomorrow rolls around nobody knows what's going to be announced, if anything.

Contradicting sean, someone else in the forum is saying an announcement will be comming the first week of November and the iBook will remain with a G3 processor and the PowerBook G4 will in have a Superdrive but none will have Bluetooth on the motherboard.

What kind of school group was it?

What did you and others who didn't get stuck do while waiting for those that did get stuck?

What did those who got stuck tell you about the experience later?

Did any of them get interviewed by the media?

Did Apple explain what happened? Did they apologize or make any other nice gestures? Do you think they handled it as well as they could?

Will you ever go back there?

So what exactly is the point of posting in this thread then? This is for WoW players. WoW can be an enjoyable game - my wife and I play it together, probably 4 hours per week.

True enough, people can get addicted, but that's not what I'm discussing at all.

So if you haven't got anything to say regarding this thread topic, take it somewhere else!

My wife and I also play.. sometimes together sometimes not. We have 2 mains that we only play together... Sometimes we play 3 hours a night, sometimes neither one of us plays for 2 weeks. its a "in the mood" thing.. kinda like... lovin lol.

I doubt SNK was telling the truth, but I'll continue to say it; we're not going to have any online third party games until Nintendo gets a first party game out there. At this rate, the first one is going to be either Pokemon Battle Revolution, Super Mario Strikers Charged, or BWii.

Pokemon is tentatively scheduled for June 25th by IGN's (often innaccurate) listing. I'd say that's the soonest to expect online play :(

This then brings us to Pokemon Revolution as the first and only video game on the Wii, as of yet, that will have the above-mentioned feature.

This is incorrect; Smash Bros, Strikers, and BWii have all been stated to have online play, and BWii's LAN capabilities were demoed at Leipzig.

However, Pokemon is the only one to even have a suggested release date, so it'll probably be the first.

WOW. Those prices are pretty great!

Now when exactly did you get your iMac G5? Oh well, I guess prices are never safe, but now it's gonna be tough to sell my 12" to get a 15" without paying a huge upgrade price. :(

I have yet to see a normalized distribution, a linear regression, a standardized distribution, or anything other than just the mean. If everyone used SPEC [http://www.specbench.org/] to benchmark computers, it would make life much simpler in benchmark statistics. Now to find out in a pretty much standard benchmarking suite [SPEC] what σ [standard deviation, in this case] are for all computers measured to figure out what area the Power Macs are in--in percentiles and compare to the rest of the computers tested. Now that'd be a lot more significant.

Yes I know about that redundancy of means and averages, but I've also heard them spoken in the same sentence before as well in that manner. Though Spec benchmarks are based on tests that assume processes that have zero errors, a non-realistic assumption, and thus don't show what really can happen to code on a Pentium vs. a G4. They unfairly bias the Pentium because its very weakness is its error checking which gets stuck in its more numerous stages. Most all code you are going to run across has some minor errors, and it is up to the processor to decide whether or not they are significant enough to terminate the program. I wouldn't trust a benchmark unless it used realistic code.

Was Apple P58 the guy who sent us the pdf of the new G4 towers, and then got attacked for supposedly being unreliable?

"We" want Apple to succeed as much as you do. What we don't want is for Apple to become complacent, as it has recently, and sell nothing but high-priced boxes full of yesterday's technology. Um...I don't know what to say.

7.4"? That sounds familiar...its smaller than the ti-books right now, and even smaller than the current iBooks.

Is this the lame attempt in Photoshop for an ebook? And why would it be a powerbook?

    Grr.
