I guess I am what you would call a switcher. I was an OS/2 to Windows NT to LINUX/UNIX to MacOSX ( better UNIX ) switcher. I now only use OSX and Windows 98 ( and then, only for 1 application )

Having said that, I have to say that this has been a fun discussion to watch. I want to put the memory concerns of this new processor to rest by simply saying that I would be shocked if Apple didn't user DDR 2 ( see http://www.commsdesign.com/design_c...EG20021016S0038 ). This would satisfy the memory bandwidth needs of this new chip.

Second, as for the no performance gain, coupled with the faster P4 mantra, I have to say that there are some mis-informed people here. I suggest that we start a new thread and have everyone list the top 5 apps they use on the mac. This is what would clearly define any performance gain a user would or wouldn't see.

The reason I suggest this is that many high performance app developers on the window side ( and I am sure Mac too ) have been working with 64 bits for a while in their 32-bit applications. Even MS in several of their APIs will divide their values returned from objects in two 32bit chunks that must be reassembled into the original 64 bit values. I myself have seen this in file system operations in the Win32 writing I have done.

Since such operations described above require two ticks of the proc to process, I would take a slower 64 bit AMD or PPC processor in a heart beat over a much faster p4 for hard core applications. So a 5 GHz p4 at best on these types of apps still only keeps up with a 64 bit at half it's speed. An OS optimised for 64-bits make this more so.

Now, will every app see a difference? No.

If my average apps I use often are only Quicken, Mail, IExplorer, iChat, Word, etc. then a 2.4 GHz P4 will be snappier than a 1.8 PPC or AMD. If your average apps are DVD Studio, Final Cut Pro, Maya, Cinema4D, etc. then a 64 system will be an improvement. I won't even go into databases, except to say that in the future, more and more apps will start using them. Need proof ? iPhoto and iTunes both are primitive apps that use a crude database to track your data. Overtime, more and more apps with get more advanced in this idea, and you may see OSs come out with master Databases built into them that iApps, as well as other apps can use natively.

So, with all of this said, What are the apps you use on a daily basis?

    Let the flames begin,
    Max.

Uh, you can already do that.

    $150 less.

As far as the rest, I'd love to see a new iBook with 1 GHz G3, 512 MB PC133 RAM, 32 MB Video Card, 60 GB 5,400 RPM, etc. But it's probably going to be an 800 MHz G3, same FSB, same RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive (though 5,400 RPM would be nicer than the current 4,200. They already make the drives), maybe a VC upgrade if the TiBook gets a 64 MB one, and the usual. 32 MBs would be really nice.

I'd like to get one after I move, but I might just wait until they do get the 1 Gig, or buy an "old" 700 12.1 inch. I like the small form factor (and the smaller price). But the 14 does have better battery life.

And before anyone says they're too slow, have you actually used one? I got to play with one for a little while. I wouldn't be do audio/video on it much, but for basic stuff it was fast (even on 10.1.4). And durable. The guy dropped it from a few feet up, it just kept right on working.

Much nicer than my Mom's old 400 MHz G3 PB.

The HD-DVD player is VERY quiet. Just make sure your 360 has no disc in its normal DVD drive when using the HD-DVD player and volume wise its exactly the same as the PS3 playing BluRay player.

MRU - you know I own the 360 and the HD-DVD drive. What I meant was, if the Xbox 360's standard drive is also an HD-DVD player, it won't be practical unless the fan is a lot quieter.

Setup a P4 2ghz with hyperthreading enabled, and checked under XPSP2, I see two processors.

I started two different instances (in their own directories) of teh fah_core and gave them different machine ID's. They're both doing the same project (1809) but have different Run/Class/Gen ID's in the log file. They appear to be similar in size and are taking almost exactly the same amount of time to run..

Could I be doing the same WU twice? Just want to make sure I'm not wasting resources..

I was in the same boat waiting to see if Microsoft would release an updated 360, but I decided to buy one anyway. I got a really good deal on the one I bought even though it had to be shipped back for repairs a week later. I luck out and got one of the models with a quieter drive in it.

Gears of War is awesome and Rainbow Six Vegas is a great game. I have mine hooked up to my surround sound via a digital optical cable. The 5.1 sound is great. I know my neighbors don't appreciate it. I don't have a TV with HDMI yet, but for right now this will do.

If you are dying to play some of the games go ahead and buy a 360 now. If they do come out with an update later in the year you would have had several months to enjoy playing plenty of games. Besides updates are the natural of the tech beast. The only way you can get a head of the curve is if you have a bank roll like Steve Jobs.

I had a macbook and an xbox (original) stolen among other, smaller electronics items, etc.

My experience is one of your "good" neighbors is involved. In my case one of the kids of the family I lived next to (On Mercy blvd. in Savannah, GA) had broken in to my home, then split the goods between himself, another adult neighbor (who I knew was a shadeball), and a third kid.

Long story short, I intimidated the kid into spilling the beans, had the cops take his statement, and suprise, suprise... the next day he had been beaten up (comfirming that he had indeed told the truth). now he didn't say "X did this", he said "well I saw X walking away about that time" and all you can get out of that is a police visit a few days later.

I never did get the macbook back, but like you... I located my xbox, and like you I got no response from the police, or more accurately an unwillingness to act unless there was an airtight case. But I did get it back. Plausible deniability works both ways, and I'm sure if the thief was running through the woods he could have dropped it or stashed it outside your house or any number of other scenarios where you legally recovered it from your own property with a whole array of the thief's prints (which won't really do you much good anyway, since they can always say they "came across it" and didn't move it for fear of getting "in trouble"). In the end you probably should have just knocked on the door and posed as a salesman or something to get in the house to visually identify the unit, then forcibly retrieved it. Now that he's remote, without MS's help you are SOL. Sorry, I feel your pain.

P.S. If you have any trouble with the police failing to pursue leads that should be, I'd recommend contacting your Alderman.

P.P.S. Incidently I found out that the 13 year old "good kid" burned downed a nearly complete battered women's shelter 2 years earlier, and he got off that (no charges file) for plausible deniability as well. Police are nearly useless unless you need some paperwork filed or a statement taken unless there is a dead body involved.

The Five Eras of the Macrumors Forums

    Chapter 1
In the beginning there was blakespot and he said "let there be forums" and there were forums. Thus the Macrumors forums were created. The ability to allow comments on news articles began to draw a community that soon swelled to near 1500 and there was rejoicing. Alongside the rejoicing came flamewars, but mostly rejoicing.
    Chapter 2
But alas, not all was well in the Macrumors forums, the admins grew dissatisfied with the rather primitive comment system and thus the site integrated a new backend. Gone was the primitive comment system and in it's place stood the glorious pillar that was vBulliten. And so it came to pass that in April of the year of our lord 2001 all of the existing members departed on an exodus to the new forums.
    Chapter 3
Bu August 2001 the ranks of Macrumors began to swell and many familiar faces such as dukestreet began to arrive. Over the next few months Macrumors enjoyed a massive influx of new sane users. But in Feburary 2002 the serenity was shattered. A chosen son was cast out of the glorious forums by God himself, never to return. The message was clear: "One cannot go aginst the word of God." And while most accepted this a few dissented and were exiled or fled.
    Chapter 4
Community Discussion was enjoying it's golden age until it was shattered. A massive influx of posters with no other purpose then political discussion arrived. The sane members fled while a few were trapped by the Siren's call of flame bait. Finally the political threads were exiled to the darkest corner of the forums, in the hopes that they would never be seen again. The demi-gods began to roam the Earth alongside mortals in this time, it was a time of magic and strife. The Gods even delegated some of their powers to a few Chosen Ones.
    Chapter 5
We now live in the fifth era. New members who somehow accumulate massive amounts in a short time continually amaze while Hell's minions still attempt their occasional attack on the forums.

It would be great if we could also have possibly have a team overtake, and who may overtake our team. In addition, something showing the day-to-day output of the team.
Already on the to-do list (see the first post).
I meant to do this at the same time as building in user targets but i'll keep it for the rewritten version. That way you'll have something to look out to. A bit like Christmas indeed. ;)

    questions:
About the day-to-day output, what do you mean? Info that is not provided in the team details? In reference to overtaking?

basicly, people had some WU they hadent got credit for, stanford gave cedit for all these uncredited WU over a three day period, everything is back to normal.

I currently have my own forum (phpbb) that I run on my website. I recently just got a new hosting provider and I'd like to transfer my forum from my older provider to the new one.

The problem I run into is that because my database is about 25 megs in size I have to find some way to break it down into smaller chunks because they will not allow me to upload the file in any larger than two mb chunks.

Anyone out there have any experience with this that they might be able to offer some advice?

There was even one topic wth the title "Dual 867 and Fire" or something to that affect. The attitude isn't necessary and you still haven't given me any real info. Are the chips in the new PMs different than previous G4s? Perhaps it is an issue with trying to implement DDR memory in the new machine? I wasn't being a d!ck so just chill out. I'll ask my question again: What's up with thew PowerMacs and all the probs? The Quicksilvers and Graphites were so solid.

Sorry - not trying to launch in to you.

Precise chip details I don't know, but it looks like this is covered in another posting.

WRT "overclocked". The essence of "overclocking" is going outside manf specs. Apple would be crazy to do this. Consider: Apple says the PMG4 will operate reliably (their warranty - take the machine back if it fails stuff) if you keep it within the specified "ambient" temperature - up to 30c or 40c or something like that. Apple will have designed the machine so that if this condition is met, then the CPU will not exceed a particular temp - probably 70C. Mot will have supplied Apple with chips that Mot warrants can be reliabibly run at a particular clock rate if they are kept within a particular temp range (this is is likekly to be 70C). So this gives a chain of, if the user users the machine as specified, Apple and Mot will replace it if it fails. If you "overclock", ie push the clock rate up and it hence it generates more heat and goes outside the specified temp range, Apple will not warrant it works and Mot wouldn't replace the CPU if it failed for this reason. So I say that these machines are not overclocked, whatever you, and thousands of others on both this board and maybe others, say - simply because I think the definition is all wrong. So in that sense, "rubbish" is still my opinion of the notion that they are overclocked - not as an attack on you but on the validity of using the phrase/word.

If machines are bursting in to flames, I've not seen anything here, but I'll keep a look out.

Hope that's a more helpful response.

Hey it's your dream. Don't let other people stomp on it. If Steve Jobs and Wozniak had when they had started Apple it wouldn't have gone anywhere. Also I have a question for everyone. I hear everyone refering to the current case as the El Capitan. Wasn't it originally the Yosemite? Or was Yosemite just the code name for the B/WG3?
