No iPhone for me then. Cingular blows, we're leaving in December when our contract is up. They have to the the worst cell company in the US, both customer service and the actual cell service

Agreed. From the reviews coming from JP Power and the like, those aren't merely opinions but generally accepted as true traits of Cingular as a company. What do you really expect though from a company that aquired half of its customers through purchase? They basically doubled their user base by acquiring AT&T Wireless and not through honest signups of people enticed by their good service and reputation.

Stan Sigman is seriously the anti-Steve Jobs.

Anyhow, it would be easily unlockable for use on T-Mobile here in the U.S. as well as any of the GSM carriers abroad. At most it would be a $10-$15 charge at your local independent phone dealer.

So did you opt-in that the government / law enforcement gets the tracking data of your phone (smart-phone,dumb-phone,whatever-phone) .... well does not really matter because they don't care if you opted in or not, they just store it on THEIR server (which is quite different than having it on my phone and my laptop with only me having access ... well its still stored on the government server)

It's not the same issue. This is a problem with people close to you, be it a spouse, boyfriend, relative, or for that matter a cop lifting information from your phone.

Personally, I encrypt, I restrict access. So this isn't a problem for me, but that doesn't mean that I don't see the major problem with it.

How are you MBP owners liking your Thunderbolt port? Do you feel like someone with a DVD disk in 1975?

Having a host with that port makes it easier to get a device to match than the other way around. At most months until match-up instead of years.

I refuse to waste any more time arguing with someone that doesn't understand what he's talking about and thinks a niche format will rule the world in short order and that adaptors are 10 cents on the dollar for complex new high speed connectors. Good luck arguing with this guy. I'm done wasting my time.
Yeah, I said Thunderbolt would take over the world when I said that USB and Thunderbolt were complimentary. Thunderbolt for high bandwidth, USB for low bandwidth.

Yeah, super complex high speed adapters that we've seen done time and time again in an affordable manner.

Glad you're done arguing. Clearly you only had two points to try and refute and it would be embarrassing for you to just leave the rest of my previous post with no replies.

Exactly. This made me download Trapster, which warns of flooded roads, construction, etc. Perhaps you (all the people saying it should be pulled) should research the app first.

In addition, I just had the pleasure of going through a sobriety checkpoint a few weeks ago. I rarely drink - gives me an amazing headache, which has earned me the ridicule of college friends for years... it took 20 minutes to get through the checkpoint, and I felt embarrassed and harassed.

Sorry folks, we don't live in a police state. If you want to have police checkpoints everywhere to track your movements, yeah remove this. Otherwise, give those of us who don't feel like having bright lights shined at us and being talked down-to by the cops a way to avoid it.

BTW, can the government demonstrate any impact on law enforcement through the use of websites/apps that display this information? Don't blindly support things that have no data to back them up.

The app does not need to go away completely. The "offending" information could just be made not available.

Note that if I'm right (trust me!), then there's a gap.... no Apple box with a Conroe? I don't think so.... Apple will introduce a new system with support for a single Conroe. Hopefully it won't be the MacPro with a different mobo, but a completely new box (fingers crossed).
Perhaps some kind of high performance consumer-oriented/gaming-oriented tower?

    (Just pure speculation...)

But FW isn't mac only by choice or need. Abit, Asus, Gigabyte and others all offers boards with FW. It was a common feature for motherboard manufacturers for some time. Will TB be included in their low end boards? More then likely not but from mid tier to high end boards will have it.

Very true, but in the end, USB2 won out.

the iPhone is going to be a useless product unless they release it in big enough sizes to replace my iPod. It's like carrying two ipods around. I already have a 60 gig...why would I spend the extra money to buy an expensive phone that only holds 5 gigs or something? It's just a dumb idea, unless they release major sizes that can replace the big ipods. I don't know why everyone is drooling over this thing.

Haha, you're funny. I'm no fan of the Xbox, but you've got to be kidding if you think Nintendo is ever really going to kill Sony/MS. Nintendo may have sold the most consoles, but most main virtually unused, cos the Wii is woefully under-powered, propped up by the same old kiddy franchises and once you get past the new gimmicks gets boring fast.

First, $100 million is load of money for anyone. Time was, not so long ago, that reporting a $100 million quarterly profit was a big deal for Apple. The iPod doesn't "make" $6 billion a year for Apple. That's just revenue. Profits are a faction of that revenue.

This might be a valid point, except that the $100 million payout isn't being charged against profits. Instead, it is being recorded as an asset and ammortized over many years, meaning it will have very minimal impact to the bottom line.

Second, Creative doesn't "give up" anything but a license to Apple for technology Apple was using before for nothing. No matter how you cut it, the license fee come right out of Apple's bottom line.

I believe this is incorrect. Just because Apple is paying the fee doesn't mean it comes directly out of Apple's profits. As stated above, the licensing fee will be ammortized over several years and thus the impact to the bottom line will be nil.

Secondly, the fee is conditional. If Creative manages to secure other licensing deals, they pay Apple back some of that $100 million. Perhaps all, if the other fees are substantial. That sounds more like a "loan" to me.

If this can be called a "win" for Apple, it's in their getting this issue squared away relatively quickly, so it doesn't overhang the next generation of iPod releases. The long-term impacts of allowing the suit to drag on could have been considerable, just as it was for RIM. Especially if in the end, they lost.

No disagreement with this. The only thing is that NTP never agreed to pay RIM back part of its licensing fee if it was successful in securing new licensees. And NTP didn't decide to become a maker of Blackberry add-on devices.

By officially becoming a member of the "Made for iPod" program, Creative is basically unofficially pre-announcing that it is exiting the player business (contrary to official denial, which are necessary in order for it to sell of remaining inventory). Zen's lost huge marketshare against Sandisk, of all companies, and there's no way Zen will hold on to what little marketshare it has with Zune entering the scene. Not to mention that "Zen" and "Zune" are phonetically similar, which all but guarantees the situation will be hopeless for the Zen line of players.

Creative realized it makes more sense to extract licensing fees from Microsoft for Zune than try to compete directly as it had against the iPod.

With that exit strategy tucked under its belt, it's now free to focus on creating great iPod accessories, which will require far less R&D than music players, and will actually be profitable.

Apple "lost" all right. Here's a summary from The Motley Fool

    Apple Gets Creative (http://www.fool.com/News/mft/2006/mft06082410.htm)

What's more, Apple is allowed to recoup costs if others agree to license Creative's patent. Will there be other deals? It's a good bet Creative will try to secure some; the $100 million the firm is getting from Apple will juice per-share earnings by $0.85 in the current quarter.

Plus, there are plenty of targets, with the biggest and most obvious being Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT). Its planned Zune player is expected out before the holiday season. Creative could get ahold of a beta version of the device and, if there's evidence of a patent violation, file suit and petition for an injunction.

Apple would love nothing better, of course. But even if Mr. Softy and other i-wannabes avoid the courts, they're unlikely to avoid the extra time and expense of working around Creative's patent. That, too, is a win for the Mac maker. Well done, Steve.

This is what would be called Pyrrhic victory for Creative. Sure, it looks like they won the battle, but only at such a cost that it ends up being a defeat in the long term.

And where in the first post from the OP did they mention 'in the Finder'?
Doesn't take a genius to work out does it? I understood him, as did plenty of others. If you wish to pointlessly nitpick in hope to make OS X's lack of basic but useful features sound negligible then so be it.

Finder lacks cut and paste. It bugs me at times too.

So why can't you use an official Apple API on the iPhone? That's crazy.

He's taking the fact that Apple has the legal right to object and extrapolating that it somehow makes sense for them to do so.

I just posted earlier today about how I was waiting for the Apple iPhone to upgrade my RAZR... but honestly thats it?

I feel like the only one who looks at that design and says "blah". Its a horrible design for a phone. Its a nano with a bigger screen. Thats it. There are 1000 phones out there now that look just like this.

I can't believe this is what we've been waiting for years and god knows how much in R&D for?

I'm a much bigger fan of the iChat Mobile. (I know its fake but its a much better idea than this. Granted it needs some work too...)

    http://idisk.mac.com/mox358/Public/ichat_mobile.jpg

apple makes its hardware designs simple and elegant, that is how they will make their cell phone, simple and elegant. While it may look very similar to other cellphones the software and the capabilities will be next to none. Try for instance "livingston" a technology apple has where you click and drag an app or widget onto a mobile device (in this case cell phone). Think of the implications of being able to bring what you were working on with you on your cell phone and be able to alter it

apple isn't doing good b/c of how their computers look (you can find others that look just like macs but still suck the big one)

So how would I go about encrypting this backup file on my Mac?

Don't rely on encryption to protect you in any way. The police can crack it, as can hackers, and they can simply demand with a court order that you give them the password. Then you're forced to essentially testify against yourself. No, pleading the 5th won't help.

It seems very odd that Apple would adopt the iPod nano look 'n' feel on the iPhone, when they've just dropped it on the nano itself. On the other hand, it's possible the nano's look was changed to differentiate it from the upcoming iPhone - though I don't buy it.

The scroll wheel looks very low on the front of the device, meaning it's hard to use it with your thumb without the phone toppling out of your hand (as with many current phones).

Whatever about the design, if Apple could make any attractive phone, which is stable(!!), with a snappy UI (!!!), and with tight integration with the Mac (contacts, calendars/schedulers, perhaps even tighter integration with Address Book), I'd snap it up.
