i thought all of the new PowerMacs were overclocked. isn't that why they are bursting into flames and having problems? not to mention the giant heatsink and fans. i don't think any processor should need that kind of cooling unless it's being pushed beyond it's limits. someone correct me. what's up with the new PowerMacs?

Activation is useless and is a royal pain for honest users. I was a PC user until recently so I had to use Adobe's activation on Photoshop. Everytime you rebuild a hard disk or upgrade a hard disk you cannot use the software until you activate. This would be fine until you run into problems with activation and it eats away hours of your life, especially if you have to wait for a live representative. Pirates will crack the activation (and yes, you can crack it, even on XP) so why this is implemented is beyond me other than to make paying customers life a little worse.

It always makes my day when I stump a Mac employee. I feel like when you stump one, you should get their job. That would make for the best Apple employees. All the time.
-Apple guy: "24 tracks?"
-Me: "No, 48. Have your locker cleaned out by the end of the week."
Anyways, that almost makes me feel as good as it does when an Abercrombie employee asks me how long I've been working there. I mean, gosh, I'm not that good-looking. At all.
Daniel.
stumping an apple store employee is a walk in the park. Most of those guy learn on the job. It's a cache 22. It doesn't pay much, so how do you expect them to be all that helpful with the higher end products if they are not real "users". Much like car salesman, they know how to sell cars and unless they are truely enthusiasts about the car, they can only know as much as the brochure does.

Microsoft could scrap their OS, and build a new one from the ground up. I know they have to provide legacy support but if microsoft said all of the companies (software and hardware) had to rewrite to make compatible, they would all do it. eventually.
Yes, I Agree. IMO Microsoft should scrap windows, and rebuild with UNIX as a foundation, then work upwards to a new OS.
Worked for Apple, could work for Microsoft

PowerMacs G5 for climate simulation needed
The destruction of New Orleans by hurricane has shown the importance of climate for life on our planet. The distributed-computing-project "www.climateprediction.net" tries to explore our climate and its changes in the near future.
Sulphates act to scatter solar radiation and reduce the amount of solar energy reaching the surface. The reduction in solar radiation cools the surface and reduces the warming effect caused by greenhouse gases. So, a prediction of the climate in the 21st century needs to contain the effects of sulphate aerosol. Otherwise the warming trend may be overestimated. This is called the 'global dimming' effect. Therefore the Oxford university in Great Britain created a special "sulphur cycle experiment" within the "climateprediction"-project.
From this experiment it is hoped that scientists will be able to better understand the range of uncertainty in climate models due to the parameters in the sulphur cycle. This information will then be used in the following experiments of climateprediction.net.
The project has just released a special MacOSX-client for the "sulphur cycle experiment", which is very crunch-intensive and needs powerful Macs in order to be completed successfully. On a P4 3.0 in Linux, running stand-alone, one Sulphur Cycle Model requires approximately 39 days (@24/7). Therefore exspect an uptime of 35 up to 60 days for a PowerMac G5 to complete just one Sulphur cycle model. Moreover you will need a quick internet connection to do the upload and download of project files.
Exspect about one gigabyte datas to be downloaded on your harddisk during the whole run and about 20 megabytes datas which have to be uploaded. The datas of the experiment will need up to three gigabytes volume on your harddisk.
This is only a job for powerusers who want to demonstrate the power of the most modern Apple technology and their real interest in the future of mankind.

I did not dispute for one moment that the Radeon pictures did NOT feature TiBooks. I think there is just too much read into a publicity picture. I would love to be proved wrong, but there is a chance that they plain wanted to use a good looking machine - whether it featured the new Radeon chip or not.
I have seen advertising for Intel based PCs in the former eastern block countries where they pasted OSX screen captures into the monitor. When I asked why they do it, they say it looks much nicer and expensive...
BTW, if you know anything about past macs, clearly the laptop in the XP picture is a G3 PowerBook, because at their time , the Pismo, Lombard, etc. were very sexy. The white logo has been photoshopped out, but the curves and the shape scream MAC!

Finally, Dell decides to use AMD chips! So now you have a choice between Intel chips and AMD chips in their computers. Looks like the PC market has VASTLY changed throughout the past 3 years. I remember Intel was always at the top, but now things have been changing slowly. Oh well, just wanted to say what was on my mind...Trying to kill some time off work. :-\ Who knows, when Conroe and Merom comes out, maybe Apple will sell a crap load of their Macs when compared to other pcs. :-D
Oh well, here's the story:

I doubt I'll be doing any modding or anything.
thats truly sad, an XBOX is a magical electronic device that only comes but once in a blue moon in terms of what it CAN do, and quite cheaply I might add.
think twice about modding it, seriously, you wouldnt regret it.

i guess everyone knows about the whole "MHz myth" thing...
Reason for G4 processors killing the Pentium 4 is cuz of the pipeline and i'm not gonna bother cuz everyone probably knows...

We will all have to wait a year for it, but it should be worth the wait.
IBM looks like its going for the jugular on ol' Intel/M$--Mac and Linux OS's running on their new chips. Cool.
The blurb about the G5 by Motorola was also encouraging.
This is all good news for me--someone who is not planning an upgrade for a year. I'm sure it is an agonizing wait for people buying Mac towers now, knowing the foundations of the technology are going to change dramatically in the next 12 months or so.
I wonder how this stuff slipped past Apple Legal. I mean, unveiling the next chip when you can't sell the current towers has got to sting a bit. Doesn't help when benchmarks put the 1.25 ghz in a dead heat with the old 1 ghz machine in many respects.
The best news is that Apple is no longer technologically hamstrung by Moto for their top-end hardware. IBM is just the kick-in-the-pants Moto needs to get crackin' on faster chips.

This is really exciting!
Too bad we don't have caning here like they do in Singapore. I'll bet if we did little punks like this wouldn't pull this crap.

same here, i know that i am clueless where to start with such a project, but am certianly interesting, a guide the explains what is needed, why, and where to look for said parts would be invaluable in helping people get started with projects like this

So this mean the drives are now down at a scale where they can be squeezed into a notebook form factor, in which case maybe seeing a SuperDrive in the next rev of the TiBooks isnt to unrealistic. [/B]
I believe this Sony notebook is over 1.5 inches thick though...maybe even 1.8 inches thick. I could be wrong, but Sony, as well as other PC manufactuers have been making tankbooks... 8-9lbs, 15-16" Screens, HUGE footprint etc. Maybe it will still be hard to get a SuperDrive in a 1" thick notebook, but Apple will do it soon. By the way, the Sony is supposedly available in Japan now. I own a Sony and a Apple...and have no problem liking both.

I love magnification. I have it set to %100! The Dock seems so dead without it. But I can see how some people don't like it.
how small is your dock? 100% is way too much, i have it turned up, and i have the bouncing icons turned off as well, makes things go a bit smother for myself

Meh, this should have had WiFi!!
Other then that, I could care less. It'll be good for anti-SDF... but why would any Premium owner be upset about this?
They swap out accessories, and paint it a different color... besides that all thats really new is HDMI... I wouldn't pay $80 for that.
If this is true, the good news is that a new HDD accessory for existing owners should be coming soon.

Like have the 24 hr average on the main section, because this is what I look at when I look at our team. Also a way to see the graphs would be great, but that might be a problem. By the way, if you ever need some help, don't be afraid to give me a shout
