    G5 PowerBooks on Tuesday!

    :D

I think MacBooks will get Merom in their second revision. Either way, I'm liking Intel's relentless surge.

    FINALLY some Mac Pro updates!

    Very interesting....

This does sound logical to me, its a combination of the lines and i am sure would make it convenient for sound and media pro's whom also have other rack equipment like massive disk arrays and audio equipment(them hings with blinkie lights in sound studios :P ).

agreed, hopefully an update with the new FCP X

Exactly! Please let this all come out at the same time so I can buy a completely new setup with the new Final Cut Studio and Lion! :D

    Here's a quick scale / mockup

Please leave the dual super drives Apple! We pros still need those to author DVDs!

I don't know if I buy this whole shortage thing.

If there is such a big shortage, why aren't people/businesses creating more production plants and capitalizing on the demand (which is only getting started from the looks of it). Where there is serious demand there is serious $$$ to be made!

You don't build these components in a garage and hire your workforce off the docks. The equipment that it takes to build touch screens are not ordered out of catalogs and shipped overnight.

The companies that make the touch screens are also acutely aware of the problem of overproduction capability such as what occurred not long ago with memory chips.

Money is made when you have properly anticipated, years ahead, what the future capacity of various components might be, and steered your production in that direction.

Apple projected their needs in critical components, such as the touch screen, and spent billions of dollars to partner with manufacturers to guarantee that "when you build it, we will come."

They are already available, these are standard PC parts now remember.

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=14564&GroupID=1674That's Conroe. Merom can be put into the current iMac/Mac Mini. If you're adventureous to open the machines up or getting a third party installation. Otherwise you're looking at an entire logic board replacement for the laptops. It's probably better just to wait and buy an entire new laptop.

There is no current Mac that this chip can "drop into", apart from maybe a Mac Pro, but going from a Woodcrest to a Conroe would be a downgrade in that case.

The Merom that should eventually go into the iMac, mini, MBP and MacBook are currently not on sale to the consumer.http://guides.macrumors.com/Merom

That has never been Apples stance ( when ever I read their reasons) its become the "Common wisdom" among many people who are Anti Jailbreaking.

And they argue and argue with nonsense.
First, I'll set aside that I don't care what the 'common wisdom' of people who are anti-jailbreaking is. Second, you failed to actually refute any single point I made in this part of your reply. Third, I wasn't actually talking about unlockingI was talking about piracy with some other considerations. Apple's chief interest is to protect its platform, and aside from securing revenue, that also means protecting its developers. Unlocking is a point I overlooked, though. It may be in Apple's interest to go out of their way to prevent that as well depending on how they handle it with wireless providers.

Unlocking is legal and many people just can't accept it.
Who cares if it is legal? That's not what this is about.

Why Apple caused this due to control.
I would agree with this statement at face value in the sense that Apple does want to control security of their platform, sales in the App Store, their carrier agreementsbut I'll wager you meant it more along the lines of 'schoolyard bully' control, and that would just be ignorant. Whenever Apple (or, for that matter, most any company) does something which upsets some users it is carefully weighed and done only with good reason.

You also point out another Myth created by apple, the "Quality of product" myth. They have to control the product to provide quality. So far I can name 10's to 100's of times Apple has failed to provide such good tight control on the quality of their products, from:

Updates to IOS that crash or disable basic functioning of the device to
Apps in apple's own App store that either violate peoples information and bank accounts to apps that simply do not work and people paid money for them. The Iphone antenna, yes these are just the examples I can quickly post.

I can prove apple is delinquent in its stewardship of "Quality" Apple has a great ability to be teflon company with Steve Jobs getting on stage and exclaiming the problem is never Apple its always something else. Steve should of ran for president............
Oh, good, I'm glad you've shared your subjective interpretation of this matter to set me straight. Or not. Apple's quality of product far exceeds virtually anything their competition releases, and that includes nearly all of their product categories. If you expect hardware and software to be released completely bug free you're living in an insane dreamland.

Computers by companies like HP, for example, are on occasion released with serious bugs (drive conflict BSoDs out the box, frequent DOAs, issues like broken audio) but nobody actually reports this. It is because nobody really cares. Customers just return the computers or employees of stores send them back to the company or perform the relevant upgrade (as communicated with the company; the later is frequently the case in stores like Best Buy).

As for phones, competition of iOS (especially Android) frequently comes with incomplete or unstable features and it is fleshed out as the user goes along. It is all a part of Google's development cycle (nothing necessarily wrong with this different approachsome prefer it) or the half-assed way in which some third-parties (e.g. Motorola) treat a device (due to having less control over the platform, and less personal interest in adequately testing the devicessomething they can get away with because one generic device does not garner anywhere near as much PR or news as a flagship Apple product).

    Rage != Wisdom or Knowledge

Upping the baseline of the MacPro to $2500, what is that.

The baseline is actually somewhere around $2100, you can lower some of the options when configuring.

No. Re-read the three sentences he typed. He said that Apple is not tracking anyone. That infers that the database of locations is not being used to track a users location.

No, he said "the info circulating". "THE" info includes the info about the database.

I highly doubt this is the case. The iPhone still leads the forefront for iOS devices and will receive iOS 5 when it is released. The only way this works is if the release of iPhone 5 is in September and I don't see that happening any time soon.
I think iOS 5 will be released after the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5 are released with the A5 processor.

I also think iOS 5 and Mac OS X "Lion" will be tightly integrated, but not dependent on each other, so your Mac experience can be taken to the next level.

How so? Everything he said fits the facts as we know them.

Shouldn't that read, "Everything he said fit the facts as we NOW know them." And who provided those facts again? Was it Steve?!...

There is NO evidence that this information gets transmitted to ANYONE, and believe me people are looking hard to prove otherwise.

What people are looking? The press? The "journalistic" dingbats of today couldn't do an expose on how to break out of a wet paper bag if their life depended on it. The brilliant politicians?! They don't know squat and are only as informed as (in this case, Apple), their source lets them be. Otherwise they know squat!

So this makes Steve look like he's telling the truth.

That remains to be seen. What about that backdating crap Apple pulled? Steve may have been aware of the action but not necessarily aware of the consequences!

"I apologize to Apple's shareholders and employees for these problems, which happened on my watch. They are completely out of character for Apple," Jobs said in a statement. "We will now work to resolve the remaining issues as quickly as possible and to put the proper remedial measures in place to ensure that this never happens again." (http://www.thestreet.com/story/10313125/apple-owns-up-to-backdating.html)

Anyone think, maybe, Steve will have to dust off this speech again to "Sent from my iPhone"?...

It's not like me to pass on any Apple product upgrade but if the next iPhone is the exact same form factor and screen size with a camera upgrade, an A5 chip and 1 GB of ram, I'm passing.

I use that money for a second iMac.

what makes you think that you can copy it to a USB drive or disc? I have disc for Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard. None of those disc can be copied, some of them can only be used on their original machine (or the exact model). the past 3 OSes can't be copied, and so far there's nothing to suggest we can just make backup copies of Lion.

All OS's can be copied. I copied all my Leopard Tiger original discs without any issues. Also the current Lion previews can be copied as many times as you want to.

I'm really tired of the common 'wisdom' that looks at current phone-only numbers (dominated by Android 2-fers) and declare the inevitable, eternal dominance of Android, particularly in light of articles like this...
    http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/4/Apple_iOS_Platform_Outreaches_Android_by_59_Percent_in_U.S

That's 59% iOS over Android when you count the whole platform. (That's 59% MORE, not 59 apple, 41% android).
That's a single iOS ecosystem that includes THE platform of the future (the only 'finished' tablet currently available), compared to an Android environment that's fragmented even in phones, and completely disjointed with its beta (of course) tablet platform (fresh out of the oven, no muss, no testing.)

Just as the media pumps up the underdog in a political race to sell more ad minutes (no one wants a boring horse race), Apple MUST be taken down a notch if there are going to be page hits.

My money is where it counts... on AAPL.

If Apple moved to America then I'd have to stop buying their products. They're already quite expensive now. If that price jumped up then I'd just buy a competitors product instead.

Infact one has to wonder if there are more US nationalists than people who like cheap products. Somehow I don't think it'd involve a narrow margin.

Right now Apple products are priced well and their production quality is very high. Why would we need to change that?

I've said all along the imac will get conroe. With woodcrest in the mac pro, I'd say it's pretty well guaranteed. The imac only got a laptop processor because it was the only choice. From here on out it'll get the desktop processor it deserves.

I also think the macbook will get merom sooner rather than later. The two lines will still be differentiated by size, screen res, casing, backlit keys, dedicated graphics, and express card slot. The macbook needs to compete against PC laptops, not the macbook pro. The processors will pretty similar on the G4 laptops before intel (1.33/1.42 for the ibook, 1.5/1.67 for the powerbook) and yet there were still plenty of compelling reasons to go for the powerbook. Same thing still applies.

Your rock solid reasoning has won me over. I wasn't sure about what chips would be used where, but I think you have me convinced.

I just hope the Mini sees an upgrade relatively soon inasmuch as the phantom mid-range tower has yet to materialize. I may have to break down and get the Yonah one.

I doubt this, but here's why it could happen:

    1. It's very likely that Apple is maintaining OS X (at a certain baseline of functionallity) on alternative CPUs -- including ARM. They clearly have a history of this and it has proven to be very valuable when they've had to switch.

    2. ARM processors of 2013 or 2014 might be significantly more competative with intel than the ones being used in phones and tablets today. I think a lot of the disbelief on the idea of this switch is focusing on the idea that current ARM processors running full OS X, but that's not how it would be.

    3. Apple has proven several times that they are willing and able to pull off this kind of architecture switch smoothly. When 68000 CPUs stagnated they moved to PPC. When PPC processors stagnated and intel CPUs jumped ahead they moved almost seamlessly to Intel. If any company can figure out how to do this without a hitch, it's Apple.

    4. Cocoa-based apps will move over fairly easily. They're aren't too many important Carbon-based apps left, with some major exceptions. I think Office & iTunes will be Cocoa by then; Apple doesn't care about Adobe.

But realistically, Apple will only do this if there is a significant long-term win.

And I don't see it what that could be... certainly not by 2013.

If there is *anything* to this rumor (which I doubt -- how do a bunch of barely literate idiots get inside info on Apple's long term plans?), it's just Apple keeping their options open as usual.

This whole thing is stupid. Of course the iPhone will track what cell towers and wi-fi access points are around it. It needs this information to be able to make phone calls and access the internet. It makes sense that this info be stored so that it does not have to gather in info every time (basic cacheing). What Apple did not anticipate was that someone would find this database and would start screaming about an "invasion of privacy". It is probably something that Apple could have foreseen and they should have encrypted this info, but until someone proves that this info is actually being transmitted back to Apple, it's just a bunch of crap.
