All-nighters, ah, those were the days, I'm still something of a night owl (all right then I'm an insomniac) and for coots old and young like myself it's good too see Britain occasionally pulls its finger out when it comes to night time entertainment, precluding strip joints and over-priced over dry-iced shrines to a monotonous beat. Well you'll be glad to know that the UK will be waking up from it's Victorian slumber for a couple of nights in May to mark an annual celebration of arts, history and heritage. Now I know this all sounds a bit dry, why visit a museum when you could be off your face snogging someone on the dance floor but take a look at some of the events planned anyway :p

Museums at Night 2011

Friday 13th to Sunday 15th May

Museums at NightHundreds of museums and galleries across the UK will be opening their doors at night for gallery gigs, twilight film screenings, theatre shows, midnight murder mysteries, all-night sleepovers, torch-lit tours and much more. Tying in with the European event La Nuit des Musées, Museums at Night will be offering the chance to experience a whole array of fantastic museums, cultural venues and historic houses once the sun goes down.  Culture Show, BBC 6 Music and 10 O’clock Live presenter Lauren Laverne (remember Don't Falter by Mint Royale?) is the Ambassador for Museums at Night. She explains “Museums at Night is a fantastic initiative that really makes museums and galleries accessible, fun and interesting. There are countless great events going on over the Museums at Night weekend – I can't wait to sample some of them."

Here's a few freebies that caught my eye… to be honest they should all be free but what ya gonna' do?

13/05 National Portrait Gallery Late Shift Extra: Capturing the Capital. An evening of photography and the city. Free screening of Kar’s favourite film, as well as live music and photography workshops.
13/05 1950s Late Night Opening at the National Media Museum, Bradford. 1950s inspired fashion show, live swing music, jive dancing lessons, make up artists, retro cinema and more.
13/05 A 'Future Shorts' film night with live music at Valentines Mansion in Essex, not suitable for children. Good, sounds like it might be a bit spicy then.
13/05 Banknotes and Bullion: Museums at Night 2011 at The Bank of England. Take a look at the money we don't have.
14/05 Hitchin Museum getting down with eclectic music from DJ Keith Fitzpatrick Matthews and projected images from photographic artist Bakhti. To be held in or outdoors, weather permitting.
14/05 One for the trippers, an (alien) planetarium show set to Holst's The Planets at Birmingham's Thinktank.
14/05 Music at Night at Watford Museum. Listen to live music while you explore our collections and exhibitions, and enjoy a drink from the licensed bar.
14/0514/05 The Late Shows Culture Crawl in Tyneside. 25 venues put on performances, hands-on activities, guided tours and events all evening so that visitors. Free buses too!
14/05 Bluejam's 'Vintage Contemporary' 1940s Swing Band evening at Penrith and Eden Museum. Free vintage swing band and other events. Bookings only.

There are literally 100's of events lined up, I as usual dived in and asked for the full listings which extend to over 37 pages, which I think might take this blog post to a novella, so I've uploaded the list on Scribd so you can all take a look here. You can check which are free events, who offers discounts and so on in your local area. Go on, have a lie in for Friday the 13th and please don't wear a hockey mask when you're out that night!

There's a rather handy Google Map too so you can find out what's on in your postcode area.
