There are many sports played across the world, but only one truly captivates the global community. Some call it soccer and some call it football, but everyone embraces the majesty and splendor that the sport offers to all of its fans. The world's most recognizable soccer club is England's Manchester United, a team that means so much to so many in all corners of the globe. Devil Worship: A Fan's Voyage with the 2008/2009 Manchester United Red Devils describes one American's semi-autobiographical obsession with the team that has shaped so much of his life's positive (and sometimes negative) experiences. Readers from America to Australia will appreciate the universal theme of uncontrollable fandom detailed so eloquently by Mr. Leyland. Devil Worship: A Fan's Voyage with the 2008/2009 Manchester United Red Devils is a must-read for anybody who cherishes the world's most popular sport above all others.

Not being a big soccer fan myself, I was hesistant to sit down and start the book, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Not only does Mr. Leyland have an amazing knowledge of the game itself, but also writes with humor and wit. Its definitely a winning combination. By the end of the book, I was rooting for Man U too. I highly recommend this book to any rabid fan, no matter what the sport.

Mr. Leyland is a true word-smith when he illustrates his true passion for the "world's game". I highly recommend this book to anyone who is passionate about soccer or sports in general. Mr. Leyland writes a book that anyone can relate to, and his insight on Manchester United football is second to none!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mancs Abroad, November 8, 2009

This review is from: Devil Worship: A Fan's Voyage with the 2008/2009 Manchester United Red Devils (Paperback)
I had the pleasure of attending Kevin's book release party today at Brewhouse Cafe in Atlanta. It's no surprise the event coincided with Manchester United's away match at Chelsea. Although the result went in favor of Chelsea, the energy and enthusiasm among Kevin's fellow United supporters never wavered. As others have mentioned, this book details the trials and tribulations of a Manchester United supporter as he follows his favorite soccer club five time zones away. Kevin recounts, in painstaking detail, the 2008/2009 season on a game-by-game basis. He provides a background on the major players and his analysis and knowledge of the Barclays Premier League is second to none. What truly makes the book enjoyable are the narratives that are weaved to describe just how far he is willing to go to watch each match. Work, college football, vacations, not to mention his use of emerging technologies, really gives the reader a glimpse into the life of a superfan.I truly believe this is one book that can be enjoyed by both soccer fans and those new to the beautiful game!

ByJohn Shafer (Charleston, SC) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Devil Worship: A Fan's Voyage with the 2008/2009 Manchester United Red Devils (Paperback)
I do not consider myself as one who enjoys reading too much, but I could not put this book down. Devil Worship is a game by game journal of the 2008/2009 Manchester United season as seen through the eyes of a diehard fan across the pond from the action. This book will convert any sports fan into a fan of the English Premier League and will confirm the sentiments of those who were already fans of the EPL.

5.0 out of 5 stars A devoted fan follows his team . ., November 5, 2009
ByDave M. (Far from Old Trafford)
This review is from: Devil Worship: A Fan's Voyage with the 2008/2009 Manchester United Red Devils (Paperback)
A great read! The author provides a unique perspective of a truly devoted Manchester United fan living in the United States. His passion for the team is readily apparent, but what makes the book so enjoyable are his funny stories of the elaborate lengths he must go to in order to follow his team as they play half a world away. Typically this involves: A) getting to a TV with a satellite sports package at the crack-of-dawn, B) hitting refresh over and over again for Internet updates, C) frantic phone calls from friends and relatives. Yet besides being very funny, the author's extensive knowledge of Manchester United and soccer in general come through in his detailed descriptions of the key games of the entire season.

Devil Worship provides a detailed and entertaining account of one fan's journey with his favorite soccer team. This book is well-written and keeps the reader interested. It is a must-read for those who love the ManU Red Devils and are passionate about soccer, but it is also an entertaining read for any avid sports fan. Leyland eloquently describes the emotional highs and lows experienced by any fan who endures the victories and heartbreaks with his favorite team. Leyland holds the reader's interest by integrating entertaining accounts of his surroundings and personal experiences into each chapter. I would highly recommend this book!

This review is from: Devil Worship: A Fan's Voyage with the 2008/2009 Manchester United Red Devils (Paperback)
This is the first installment from this author and it is evident that he is into all of the finite details that a true soccer fan is passionate about. Mr. Leyland does a fine job of taking you from the beginning of the season for the Red Devils to the very last fixture. His passion for the game, players, coaches, and fans makes this a great read for all of those true soccer fans.
